Review: The All-New Nissan Patrol (Y63) | Above the Ordinary - Part 2

Introduction

I’d left you with Part-1 of my review of the All-New Nissan Patrol (Y63) .

Challenges in compiling Part-2

Phew! For an old school guy like me, understanding the vehicle became a rather long process, because there was so much to see, learn and showcase. Without much ado, let's get down to brass tacks - maximum pictures, less text!

Request to readers - I have tried to compile all details in a logical sequence, with loads of pictures, and less text. Kindly read from start to end to get all the ammunition!

What's been covered until now in Part-1

1. Quick run up to how I met a Nissan Patrol Y63
2. Few bits on the earlier gen Y61 and Y62 Patrols that I saw in a showroom
3. First drive in the Y63 Patrol
4. Some information on the interiors and exterior of the Y63 Patrol

Interiors (Contd. from Part-1)

Re: Review: The All-New Nissan Patrol (Y63) | Above the Ordinary - Part 2

Driver Assist Systems (Contd.)

Blind Spot Warning (BSW) – uses radar sensors on rear bumper. Warns driver of vehicles in adjacent lanes via a visual triangular warning on the ORVM
Review: The All-New Nissan Patrol (Y63) | Above the Ordinary - Part 2-y63_blindspotwarning.jpg

Forward Driving Aids

Intelligent Emergency Braking (Intelligent Forward Collision Warning) with Pedestrian Detection System
- Works when there is a risk of forward collision with vehicle ahead in the same lane, pedestrian ahead in the same lane, cyclist in the same lane
- Radar sensor (pic in the previous post) to detect the vehicle ahead
- Front Camera + Radar to detect pedestrians and cyclists
- Detection system will operate at vehicle speeds over 10 kmph

Side Driving Aids

1. Lane Departure Warning (LDW) – uses front camera housed behind the windscreen. Warns driver with a visual warning and steering vibration when vehicle begins to leave the driving lane
2. Intelligent Lane Intervention – uses front camera housed behind the windscreen. Warns driver with a visual warning and steering vibration and helps driver bring the vehicle back to the center of the lane

ProPilot System (Intelligent Cruise Control and Steering Assist)

Highlights

- Conventional Cruise Control (same feature that's been around for years in many cars)
- Intelligent Cruise Control(ICC) : maintains a preset distance between the vehicle and the one ahead in the same lane
- Steering Assist : keeps the vehicle in the center of the lane
- Only for expressways and not for city/rural use
- System can initially be set only when speed is greater than 30kmph

Equipment Used

- Multi sensing front camera
- Front Radar sensor

System Operation modes

- White : ICC active
- Green : ICC and Steering Assist active

Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) System

- Forward radar sensor detects for any vehicle ahead; if none, system maintains speed as set in speed limiter
- Vehicle detected ahead => system reduces speed to maintain the desired gap (low, mid, high)
- Vehicle ahead stops => system makes vehicle decelerate to a full stop
- Vehicle ahead moves to another lane => system will increase speed upto the limit set

Steering Assist – works in combination with ICC

Requirements
- Lane markings detected
- Speed above 60kmph
- Hands on steering wheel
- Turn signals off

Audio and visual alert with steering vibrations assist driver to return to the center of the lane

ProPILOT Switch and ProPILOT (ICC) Active displayed - both these are circled yellow

For each feature viz. Blind Spot, Forward Collision, Lane Departure, options are available to enable audio warning (shown by a speaker) and intervention (shown in concentric circles with the car in the center). In this case, blind spot intervention is on while LDW intervention is not enabled

BSW and LDW warning and interventions both are enabled

Re: Review: The All-New Nissan Patrol (Y63) | Above the Ordinary - Part 2

Summary of ownership till date

1. Ride and handling - brilliant. However, like any of these large SUVs, the Patrol is quite sensitive to tyre pressures; even 2psi over the recommended 33psi makes the ride over speedbreakers bouncier
2. Fuel Efficiency - 9.5 to 9.7kmpl on the highway if driven at 130kmph. Crosses 10kmpl at 115 to 120kmph
3. Kms till date - 700
4. Issues - the infotainment screen does not show all audio sources sometimes. One lock, walkaway, unlock and restart gets it back in order.

Patrol at 137kmph with engine revvin' at a mere 1800rpm

Few more images of the All-New Patrol

I managed to capture these shots of a base variant viz. Patrol XE which was with a Rent-a-Car company.

and caught a glimpse of an LE Platinum at a traffic light - the V6T badging on the front doors and the 22" wheels are the key external differences between the LE and the SE Platinum City variants

Summing it up

Defy Ordinary - that is Nissan's punchline for the All-New Patrol. My experience almost defied the ordinary - what an experience, what a car! My phone's tired, and I'm exhausted, yet elated at being able to capture many many details!

Acknowledgements

1. To Nissan Motor Corporation for bringing a lot more to the Patrol than ever before
2. The dealership for being a very courteous and committed team in the run up to delivery
3. Folks at a car wash facility who, during a 5-minute restroom break, allowed me into the car wash area and that's how I managed to take a look at the underside of the vehicle
3. Almighty for helping me all the way as I pushed myself to pen this review

Re: Review: The All-New Nissan Patrol (Y63) | Above the Ordinary - Part 2

I don't think there's any review online on the Y63, which delves into such detail and is so well articulated. I have only seen a couple of video reviews so far, and those were also very shallow.

No review would go into showing the engine ancillaries, working space under the hood (seems to be quite a lot here), the infotainment and digital cluster settings and the ADAS functions.

I can see why this car sells so well in the UAE. Bigger is better there, and it seems the Patrol/LC command the same respect there as a Fortuner does here. It is sad to see though that the UAE enjoys such well built Jap CBUs while we get overpriced CKDs. Wish Nissan brings the Patrol to India, even if it is in limited numbers. Witnessing this beast on Indian roads would be something else.

Re: Review: The All-New Nissan Patrol (Y63) | Above the Ordinary - Part 2

The review has so much details that I am thinking, how did you find so much time to delve in such details of the mighty Patrol.

Call me old school, 'cos I think with such a car we need a 3 to 4 days of familiarisation course to know all the features that one gets after spending so much

I own a Polo GT TSI for 10 years and I can confidently say that I do not know all of its features, and this Nissan Patrol might need a lifetime to know the complete vehicle.

Cheers
