Audi is in the final development stages of its Q9 flagship SUV. Slated to be the largest and most luxurious yet, it will take on the likes of the BMW X7, Mercedes-Benz GLS and the Range Rover.

The Q9 will come with a three-row seven-seater layout like the Q7. However a six-seater config similar to the Bentley Bentayga is likely to be offered as well. It's most likely to be underpinned by an extended version of the Volkswagen Group's new Premium Platform Combustion (PPC).





The platform supports longitudinally mounted powertrains, right from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol to a big V8. The V8 engine could be used in the performance-focused SQ9 along with a plug-in hybrid setup.

Audi had first hinted at the Q9 during the launch of the Q8 in 2018. Prototypes were first spotted testing in 2021.

While this test mule is still camouflaged, one can see design elements similar to the current-generation Audi models. These include slim LED daytime running lamps, a honeycomb grille and a light bar at the rear.

The Audi Q9 is primarily aimed at markets like USA, China and UAE. It could also be offered in the UK as well.

The Q9 is expected to make its debut in 2026, but may not come to the UK until 2027.

I do not understand Audi's game plan.The Q7 was a very competitive alternative to the BMW/Merc premium SUVs.

Then they blew it -- they let the Q7 age away & cut prices to slide a segment lower. The Q9 appears to be nothing more than an enhanced Q7 (the upgrade it always needed) intended for a very short lifespan, given Audi plans to discontinue ICE vehicles in the mid 2030's.

To come back to a winning position in this segment, Audi either needs (a) a big tall butch SUV like the GLS/X7 or (b) Vellfire ++. This car appears to be trying to do both, by merely enhancing the Q7.

This is happening with every car in their portfolio -- lacking meaningful upgrades, they are all sliding down the pricing scale to move sales (A4, A6, discontinued A8, Q7 etc)
