Mercedes-Benz G-Class Edition STRONGER THAN THE 1980s launched

Mercedes-Benz has launched the G-Class Edition STRONGER THAN THE 1980s paying homage to the first G-Class model, the W 460. It features colours and design elements from the classic 280 GE. The G-Class Edition STRONGER THAN THE 1980s is limited to only 460 units worldwide.

The G-Class Edition STRONGER THAN THE 1980s will be offered in two exclusive paint shades; MANUFAKTUR Agave Green solid and MANUFAKTUR Colorado Beige Solid. It gets orange indicators to reflect the vintage look. The radiator grille as well as the bumpers, flared wheel arches and exterior mirror housings are finished in Night Black Magno. The underbody protection is also finished in black. The Mercedes star on the bonnet takes inspiration from the historic emblem, featuring the Mercedes-Benz lettering and a laurel wreath on a blue background. The rear door gets an original part from the 1980s, a silver badge featuring the black “Mercedes‑Benz” lettering and a canvas spare wheel cover. The SUV rides on classic 5-spoke alloy wheels. As part of the PROFESSIONAL Line Exterior package, you get front and rear mud flaps, protective grilles for headlamps for the darkened headlights and all-terrain tyres. A roof luggage rack is available as an option.

The interior also has a retro theme to it. The centre portion of the black leather seats is covered with dove grey fabric with a chequered square design, very popular in the 80s. The front door sill panels feature the topography of the Schöckl mountain near Graz. Additionally, there is a “Schöckl Proved” badge at the base of the B-pillar displaying a historical G-model in the respective vehicle colour, and the trim moulding of the passenger grab handle bears the lettering “STRONGER THAN THE 1980s”. All cars are individually numbered in the wood of the centre console. Other features include a multi-function steering wheel wrapped in Nappa leather, a sliding glass sunroof and a 3D Burmester sound system.

The G-Class Edition STRONGER THAN THE 1980s will be available in G 450 d diesel and G 500 petrol variants.

While I dig the retro theme, the edition name makes me chuckle.

They could have made the interior a bit more retro too.

Re: Mercedes-Benz G-Class Edition STRONGER THAN THE 1980s launched

And I thought "Mahindra XUV 3XO" or "Mahindra XEV 9e" sounded cringy and weird. Sigh.

"Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ technology". "Mercedes-Benz G-Class Edition STRONGER THAN THE 1980s". And that too with BLOCK CAPITALS, AS IF IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE. The purpose of a name is easy identification, and a name must be short and simple to use. Naming a car as long as a sentence is just plain stupid, senseless and it just breaks the whole point of a name. Heck, describing the "Mercedes-Benz G-Class Edition STRONGER THAN THE 1980s" would be easier than taking the car's name . I don't know what's gotten over Mercedes, and their newfound obsession with names that are a mouthful and a half to pronounce.

Well, what lies in a name, right? Right. My name is "CentreOfGravity with self-levelling technology and I'M BETTER THAN WHO I WAS IN 2019".

Re: Mercedes-Benz G-Class Edition STRONGER THAN THE 1980s launched

Does it mean that current standard edition of G-class is weaker than 80s version?

Looking at the wheels and the interiors, it appears to draw inspiration from here.

Re: Mercedes-Benz G-Class Edition STRONGER THAN THE 1980s launched

Is there something poisoning the waters in Germany?

What is happening to the Germans these days.

They pivoted from using confusing Alpha-numeric model names to using entire sentences now for naming their vehicles without achieving the actual goal of simplifying the Model names.

This is at the same level of badly translated Anime titles.

Re: Mercedes-Benz G-Class Edition STRONGER THAN THE 1980s launched

Now Maruti will launch an Alto K10 citing " more safe than an 80s 800" and sell it as a special edition. And the normal folk will be head scratching to find out the difference. Stronger than the 80s, Mercedes, really ? What about G580 with EQS technology? Is it weaker than the 80s edition variants? Or what about all the G wagens sold since 80s ? All are weak ? Then why not refund money for them ?

Looks perfect except for the text on the passenger grab handle which is a bit too cringe for me. I know this is very low production but I feel like this isn't quite the look most G buyers are expecting.

Re: Mercedes-Benz G-Class Edition STRONGER THAN THE 1980s launched

This should be the standard G-Class sold at a (currently feasible) price range below $100,000 (US).

17"/18" wheels are good enough (please no 20"-23" wheels).
A straight-6 with maybe an optional V8.
No cartoon-ish AMG edition with a silly body kit and side exhausts. Or maybe do a few Special Editions of these for celebrities.
