Re: Renault's new 7-seater SUV to be called the 'Boreal'

Looks good, but 'Boreal'? For real?

Ah, gone are the 90s when cars were named absolutely smashingly good- Astra, Sierra, Lancer, Zen, Cielo, Esteem, Contessa, Safari, Santro...

Re: Renault's new 7-seater SUV to be called the 'Boreal'

My sudden guess is that 'Bigster' and 'Boreal' are the same cars. Different nameplates for different market but the same underneath. This might also be the 'Duster' that will come to India. I like the later more than the former w.r.t how it sounds. Remember the speculations that Bigster would come to Latin America. Well, yes but not the same name.

I am surprised by Dacia/Renault's choice of powertrains though. I like the 153 hp Hybrid but not the 1.2 Turbo-Petrol. Not even the India-spec Kiger's 1.0 Turbo. I am happy that it is not getting a diesel globally. Now it certainly won't in India. If Bigster/Borealis or the SUV showed in their roadmap and their preview is coming to India, it must get AWD. Else, we would be welcoming yet another Hyundai Alcazar.

I hope it carries the Koleos rugged DNA that Indians are familiar with; while looking bold like the duster. What hits me with ponder is the price bracket this vehicle will fit in; all this in an ALCAZAR budget would be an icing on the cake.

Makes sense, because Renault get bashed online in Latin America for rebranding Dacias instead of selling "real Renaults". Even the Dokker was renamed Kangoo in Argentina (after the unrelated Renault van), and the latest Sandero Stepway is called Kardian.

Renault, of course, insist it is not a Dacia...

India-bound Renault Boreal 7-seater SUV spotted testing

Last month, Renault announced its new 7-seater SUV for the global markets, the Boreal. It will initially go on sale in Latin America before hitting our shores sometime in 2026.

The Renault Boreal was recently spotted testing in Europe for the first time. The 3-row SUV has a unique exterior design compared to the Dacia Bigster, which is essentially the same vehicle.

The Boreal appears to have a trapezoidal grille with horizontal slats and a wide air dam at the front. It looks like a conventional SUV when viewed from the side. It has an upright front fascia, square-ish wheel arches, and a long, flat roofline. It has a raked rear windscreen with a wiper, a roof spoiler, and a shark fin antenna.

Under the bonnet, the Renault Boreal will feature a 167 BHP 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. A flex-fuel version will be available in Latin America.

Re: Renault's new 7-seater SUV to be called the 'Boreal'

I am little confused with the naming convention, Renault could have stuck to the BIGSTER naming convention instead of choosing BOREAL.

Dacia markets the DUSTER as DUSTER, so does Renault! Why didn't they change the name of that product? Personally, the name BIGSTER would sound similar to the DUSTER and it would be easier for the potential customers and sales teams.

BOREAL sounds BOring for REAL to me! Having said that, a product sells on the virtue of its strengths and not on the name, but, my take on it is, it would have sounded "cooler" as BIGSTER instead of BOREAL.

I rest my case
