Toyota is #2 in US

washingtonpost.com

Ford was knocked from the No. 2 position in the U.S. auto market, outmaneuvered by Toyota's surging sales of small cars and gas-electric hybrids, according to year-end figures released yesterday....

At Ford, U.S. sales fell 12 percent from the year before, and December sales were down 9.5 percent from the previous year...Ford blamed its sales decline on decisions to discontinue the Taurus and terminate a line of slow-selling minivans

For the year, Toyota's sales climbed 3.1 percent compared with 2006. Honda's sales grew 2.8 percent...

if toyota has taken no.2 position and they say that it has beaten ford in the process it clearly means GM is no.1

that is with respect only to the US market.

Toyota took the lead and then lost it. Last I heard, GM was back on top but with a very very small margin.

Well, if you read the above article, sales for GM has come down by 6% compared to 2006. So I dont think Toyota was #1 anytime on an annual sales basis. Maybe the news was for a particular quarter in 2007. We need to wait for the global figures to come

Globally Toyota is #1 for 2007. However this was reported mid December and the final tally is not run yet.

I guess CNN had an article yesterday stating that GM was #1,and their lead over Toyota was by a sales volume of 300K vehicles (as units).

Another couple of years, and Toyota could very well get to the top spot.
