GTO,
Do u know what is the model name of a Benz designed for rally, but, never came into rallying coz the Audi guys launched a much better rally car. This model eventually was made to road specs and sold in the 80's i think. Not many cars sold though.

I saw the car in one of the Top Gear show in BBC quite some time back.

Any idea whats the car's model name? I forgot!

Mercedes shocked the world and entered the 1977 London - Sydney Rally with a team of w123 280E's , they came 1, 3,4, and 7th. A citroen Cx came 2nd and 5th. It would have been a straight 1,2,3 win if the lead car had not sheared the drive shaft 20km from finish. They also used the w107 450SLC 5.0 with one a major panamerican rally. It also won won a few african rallys after that Mercedes decided to exit on a winning streak (i think they heard about the quattro coming)

The production did continue for some time in South Africa. There were 3 variations, the 300SE, 420SE and 500SE, they came with new specs, a facelift if you like. But I dont think it went all the way to '94 coz the W140 made its debut by then already. They have a going price of around 30 to 60K rands depending on mileage done. Thats around 3 to 4 lac rupees. the SEL stopped with the 560 which is around 75K (5 lacs).

The best merc chases I ahve seen are:

ronin - De niro is a Merc 450 SEL 6.9. supporting an Audi S8
The Peacemaker - Clooney using the brute force of a W140 to anhillate three E28 (i think - three geenration ago ) 5 series

Ajmat i second what S-350's said. The W140 in Peacemaker made me a very big fan of the S-class. The fact that the body structure remained intact even after the explosion speaks volumes of the car's inherent ability (maybe the car was restructured for the scene since cars used in Hollywood films undergo a lot of changes)

As far as Ronin goes, the Audi used in it i fear was the mighty S8. Fast and mean. What i like is the frontal shots of the cars during the film. The Audi, Merc and BMW (used in the last chase scene across Paris) make them look very mean. The director, John Frankenheimer actually created equipment for the film which is now de-rigeur for all chase films.

The best thing about the movie ronin is when they had to give the list of stuff they want,
That guy goes like S8,
Need to shove in a bit!
