GM puts temporary brakes on Vette production

Automotive recession in North America has hit the legendary Corvette.

Starting Oct 6, Vette production will stop for a week. When assembly resumes, production will be scaled down to 15 units/hour compared to 18.5 now. To top it off, the scaled back production will also bring in lay-off's.

Toyota's brand new truck plant in Texas has been idle for more than a month now. They have like 50,000 vehicles in inventory.

Its better to stop production than to offer incentives and/or have dealers giving them away. that would devalue the corvette brand. so its better to just stop the supply than keep pumping them out while they aren't selling.

Absolutely...Look at Nissan - They practically gave away Titans. Think about the resale and the brand!

'08 C6's can be had for 35-37k with some haggling in the detroit area. If that isnt devalued, then nothing is.

What?

Why then did they preview the GTR-busting ZR1 Corvette to motoring journalists two weeks back?

It doesnt make sense to release a 687bhp, 841nm tarmac-ripping monster onto an unsuspecting world just two weeks before you decide to put the brakes on production of the regular version.

Keep in mind, Corvette is really high volume (like 30K/year) for something that is almost a supercar and unlike the 911 does not have a world wide appeal, but sells primarily in the US.

That is bad news for Corvette fans like me. Not that I was gonna get one anytime soon.

People should realize the amazing value for money the Corvettes offer and buy more of them instead of spending it on other brands.
