everybody, have a look at this week's THE AUTOCAR SHOW at Bloomberg UTV on tuesday night.
it showed all the indian S classes (W116, W126, W140, W220, W221) and was a delight to watch.
the W140 is owned by the president of the MB club of india.

Hi,

I am curious to know more about the W126 in India - how they fared, what is their condition now, any ownership reviews, history, recommendations on purchase ( specifics to watch out for - engines, transmission, problems) and so on.

Will appreciate inputs from Benz gurus in this forum.

P.S. : A European link to buying W126 :W126 - MB-W126 Club - Interessengemeinschaft der Mercedes-Benz Baureihe 126

I remember riding in a W110 in the 1970s in Delhi's Diplomatic Enclave - even then I sensed that I was riding a special car.

Fantastic post V12. One thing though i think you overlooked the little detail . The picture you posted of the Ivory W110 is with a 300D badge....no W110 was ever made as a 300, leave alone a diesel.

This is a fairly recent practice. The 280 (W108) was available with a 3.5 litre V-8. so was the 190D with a 2.5 turbo diesel.

Even the W115 240D was available with the 300D engine but was called 240. Engine capacities were earlier mentioned as a 3.0 or a 3.5 or so along with their badges in the rear.

The new lot are not available in this way. The American S class ceases the S500 and the SL 500. It now becomes the S550 and the SL 550, more area specific i presume.

I will dish out a little more information about the older Mercedes Cars starting from the Ponton. A basic pic about the cars not covering all the models as V12 has beautifully tabulated them.

Mercedes and BMWs are two marques that are still known by their Chassis numbers. The Mercedes are the "W"s and the BMW are demarcated as "E" These are the letters their Chassis numbers start with

Almost each type was given a "Dealer" name which they were referred to commomnly amongst dealer jargon.

The Pontons or Round Backs/Gol Dicky were available in various trims and engines, viz:

The W120(180) W121(190) W105(219) W180(220) W128(220-SE)
W186 (300) W188(300S) W189(pillarless-300D)
W198 (Gullwing and Roadster)

Though the larger W186/188/189 were not exactly referred to being in the affordable Ponton category, nevertheless, they were so because of their rounded back shape.

THe Heckflosse or the Fintail came as the W110 ( 190-200-230 )
W111 (220-230) and the
W112 (300 and the "Grosse Heckflosse" 300SE-LWB or the 300 SEL)

Evolution and History of Mercedes models over years - C, E, S and SL Class and more-300se.jpg

W100(600) A favourite of state heads and dictators. Expensinve even in those times. Idi Amin used one so as many Shiekhs.

Evolution and History of Mercedes models over years - C, E, S and SL Class and more-w100.jpg

This true blue, serious, S Class was referred to as the "Semi Compact" and came as W108(250-280-300SEB) and W109(300SEL)

Name: 108.gif
Views: 3500
Size: 68.0 KB

Then the W114(230-250-280) W115(200-220-230-240-300D) called the "Compact"
The body shell was almost the same in these cars. The W114 was a six cylinder and the W115 was a 4/5 cylinder.
That was the main difference.

Then The W116 W107/R107 and the W123 "Smiling Face" and so on.... i can go on and on but will save you guys the misery!!.....

Join the club of old-schoolers, Ishaan. Most of us Merc lovers feel that "they don't build them like that anymore". We love our W124s and W126s (even W140s), but the newer breed lacks the timelessness. From designing classic cult-status cars, Mercedes has undoubtedly gone "commercial". Designing a car for today, something else tommorow.
