holy! So this indeed is a proof that TATA's designs are world class or this company is a part of Cherry with TATA has a partnership. Soon we might see Altroz being copied too!

I cannot really see this as much of a copy. If you look at its side profile, it has much longer front overhang, rear part from the side profile resembles a bit of a class. Maybe the headlight resembles Nexon facelift's.

If somebody can explain, would be appreciated.

Re: Car Designs copied by the Chinese

Yikes! Someone either at Chevrolet or MG needs to give everyone an explanation here. The 2021 Chevrolet Captiva and the MG Hector are an exact copy of each other? Right from the bumpers to the taillights to the rims! Even Maruti and Toyota bother to make some changes to the exteriors when selling one single car amongst themselves with two different badges.

However, since the Captiva is all-new for 2021, the question is who copied who? We know the Chinese are copycats, but now are the Americans following the same route? Or am I missing something here? Luckily they have different interiors to say the least.

Yes.

Car (Baojun 530) is developed by SAIC-GM-Wuling. It is marketed under different names.
Chevrolet Captiva, MG Hector, Wuling Almaz are the other names. SAIC is the parent company of MG. In fact GM's Halol plant was bought by MG and Hector is made there.

My dear friend, this car is the Flag bearer of the absurd but now widely popular idea known as Badge engineering.

The same car is sold in different regions in 4 different avatars, namely MG Hector, Chevy Captiva, Wuling Almaz and Baojun 530.

Ohh, that's crazy I had missed that. So next time anyone tells me that they miss Chevrolet in India and want to buy one, I'll simply direct them to the closest MG showroom.
That's the next best thing haha. Surprisingly, the Captiva sold at a much higher price bracket when it was in India than the Hector.

Re: Car Designs copied by the Chinese

I don't think this is a U.S spec Captiva. In the U.S., Captiva is discontinued in 2018 and it is replaced by a much bigger SUV called Chevrolet Equinox. It was produced by GM U.S.A., while the latest iteration is produced by SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile, a joint venture between SAIC Motor, General Motors, and Liuzhou Wuling Motors Co Ltd.

I guess this latest Captiva is for Chinese, Middle east, South American and Brazilian markets. I really liked the old Captiva, It looked more butch and bold, like a true SUV, while this looks like an MUV. MG Hector is more of an MUV than an SUV, I still don't know why people compare it with Tata Harrier, Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. It should be compared with Tata Hexa and Toyota Innova Crysta based on the body shape and vehicle characteristics.

This actually looks like a fusion between the Range Rover and the Landcruiser 200 series!

Saw this thread all thanks to CrAzY dRiVeR bumping it today.

This was 15 years ago! How times have changed. Something that was scary 15 years ago is almost the norm today. I am feeling scared about what is in store for us15 years from now!

The Zotye Nomad (which was sold in India as the Premier RiO) was a knockoff Daihatsu Terios.

The recently launched Haval Jolion, sold in South Africa and Australia (extremely popular in the former and is expected to have a Global NCAP or ANCAP rating soon), is a smaller knockoff Volvo XC60 at Creta prices.

The Suda SA01 (electric) is a knockoff Suzuki SX4 sedan and is sold in Germany without homologation. The Crashanlage at the ADAC Technik-Zentrum (same laboratory that tests Indian cars for Global NCAP) tested it for 40mph 40% deformable barrier impact in January 2021 and it put up a very poor show,

as did the Jiangling Landwind (Range Rover knockoff) that they tested in 2006.

In short, even if these knockoffs look identical, they don't always provide the same crash performance as the originals. I'm not sure about the rest. That said, modern Chinese manufacturers are improving on safety in leaps and bounds. Lynk&Co and Nio come to mind (both recently bagged five star Euro NCAP ratings). GWM/Haval sell ANCAP five star cars in Australia, but they sell some substandard cars in countries like South Africa. I'm hoping MG won't join this club later this month when Global NCAP crash test results for the Hector may be revealed.

Off-topic, but sometimes I can't help wondering whether the 'stripped-down' cars manufacturers sometimes sell in India are just very good knockoffs. They look identical, share some parts, but have different powertrains and often show different safety performance, and are sometimes built on different architecture altogether.

The Zotye Nomad cannot be called as a knock-off, as Zotye had bought the tooling for the previous generation Daihatsu Terios, when Daihatsu had launched the next generation Terios.

An example in India of a similar case is that of the Toyota Qualis and the Sonalika Rhino.
