Pal I bought one Alfa and that had given me more trouble than all the other new cars I;ve bought. I'd advice you to stay away - this is advice that I didnt take, mind you. Lived to regret...

Hey Mike,

Did you not post in this thread that your uncle already had an E-Class since 2002?

Either ways, the 5 wins hands down. In the latest autocarindia, the Merc ranked 3rd, Audis A4 second and the Beemer got the top spot. No competition. Despite Beemer not having a comparable sales / service support infrastructure in India.

Tut, tut Mikey. Does your uncle own a 7 Series bought second hand in '03 or an E Class bought new in '02 as quoted in the original thread? Why then would he want to buy a 2nd hand E Class yet again, I wonder?

Make up your mind, mate.

The case is simple. Between a used E39 5-series and a W211 E-class, the W211 (new shape), takes the cake. But only by a whisker. The E-39 is infintely more reliable and better to drive. But the W211 is more luxurious and has a better ride quality.

However, between the new 5 and W211, the new 5 takes the podium. If you can look for one with standard tubeless tyres, rather than run-flats which come as standard on the new E60 5-series and ruin ride quality, you have a winner. The new 5 is more luxurious, is better equipped and is more comfortable in the rear than the W211. Of course, the new 5 has more problems than the older E39, nevertheless its a better car even maintenance-wise to live with. Also, the 5 should hold better in terms of re-sale value in present day Germany.

Sorry to get you all confused.

The 7 is with my uncle in Germany. And the E-class with my other uncle in Cochin in Kerala. And he is the guy who is prompting my uncle in Germany to buy the E-class. I’ll speak with him this weekend and will let you know what’s he up to.

GTO

Glanced at the article, although the BMW came first, am not sure whether the Audi came 2nd. Handling and interior finsih were not upto par but remember Autocar globally has a policy, new is best. If you see the first test of the elantra vs skoda, the elantra won. A few months ago, they did this again with the skoda and the skoda won !!!!???

I respect everyone's opinion, but for me I like all the cars, but i prefer owning Audi A6 or A8 they are packed with power and great to drive.

End of the day, three great cars which are individual in their own way. Drive and decide which is best for you. One cannot go wrong out of these choices

Got some sad news,
After consulting my uncle’s friend who owns a new 545i, my uncle dropped plans to buy that, coz he doesn’t recommend it. Now am tired of consulting my uncle… now I quit.
But the good news is that, he got plans to a used ’04 A8.

I was quite busy these days… and I’ll leave to uk in a month or two. But I’ll post the supercar pics which I’ve taken very soon.

For once I'll side the 525i... that is one quick - not to mention hot - looking machine. The E now looks a bit old, and though still extremely classy and comfortable, I'd much rather have the new 5.
Just my 2c...

I dont know if this will help at all, but just have a look at this drag race between the E90 M5 and the E55 AMG

5.4 MB only.

I'de say go for the 5 series.
