Safety ratings got tougher for 2010 in US

Shoppers looking to buy the safest 2010-model cars will have 67 fewer choices this year than they did in 2009. That's because the test for safety ratings got a lot tougher.

Fewer 2010-Models Pass Tougher Safety Tests - WSJ.com

The institute, an auto-safety research group funded by the insurance industry, named 19 cars and eight sport-utility vehicles as "top safety picks." Among them are the Audi A3, Honda Civic, Dodge Journey and Ford Taurus.

Poor Safety rating on some new Cars

NDTV has an article on the poor safety rating of some cars in the American market.

Shockingly all the new models of the 3 German brands figure in the list. What is going on? Or were the norms suddenly changed?

Re: Poor Safety rating on some new Cars

This is a new test added to the IIHS test group (Small overlap front test). Many of the cars like the Toyota Corolla have not gone through this test and I think most of the cars will not fare well in this test, in the given iteration of the vehicle. All the mentioned cars have good rating in the following standard test like Moderate overlap front test, Side impact test, Roof strength test and Rear crash protection/head restraint test.
All the information about the new test can be had at the link (http://www.iihs.org/news/rss/pr081412.html and http://www.iihs.org/ratings/frontal_test_info.html) The news article is typical media hype (not stating all the facts), but the test is sure a step in the right direction.
