Fiat 500 to get 0.9-liter Turbocharged Two-Cylinder Engine in 2010 - Carscoop
We just got our hands on the Fiat Group's refreshed product plan for 2010 and 2011 that was introduced by the firm's CEO Sergio Marchionne in Rome today. We'll bring you the full monty later on but here's a taster of what the company is planning to launch into the market.
Next year will see the arrival of Fiat's long anticipated New Small Gasoline Engine that will make its premiere on the 500 mini. The innovative 0.9-liter twin-cylinder gasoline engine features turbocharging and Fiat's Multiair technology that controls the intake valves, depending on the horsepower needed.
Fiat says that while the new engine offers the same performance as a larger naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, fuel economy and, as a consequence, CO2 emissions are significantly improved.
In addition to the advantages in fuel consumption, the twin-cylinder engine is also said to be 20 per cent lighter in weight and more compact in size compared to a 4-cylinder engine with the same output.
"This is the maximum expression of the concept of downsizing, offering lower consumption and emissions without impacting performance," Marchionne said during the presentation.
The new two-cylinder engine is expected to be offered in two turbocharged variants developing 80HP and 105HP while Fiat will add a 65HP naturally aspirated version, also equipped with the Multiair system followed up by a CNG version.
At least in Europe, the twin-cylinder engine will find its way on the Fiat Group's A- and B-Segment models like the Fiat 500, Panda and Punto EVO.

Thanks Sid. Scoop specialist again at work...You woke me up. Multi Jet and now multi air ? I thought it should have been multi rocket ;) . Jokes apart , this is good news.
@phoenix. Knowing Fiat, that will take a long time. I will be glad to be proved wrong. Fiat always had lot of potential but never brought in the numbers.
So when can we Indians expect a TATA Nano with Fiat 0.9L Multiair? It will be an amazing combination.
Is this a same engine that is used to be their on Fiat Uno or is it going to be an engine that the Fiat will have on its small car in India ??
1) Multiair, IIRC, is just allowing or controlling amount of air entering the cylinder. May be I am wrong as I was not able to get detailed information unlike VTEC.
2) This engine will not appear in Nano IMO. This is a high tech engine which will increase cost for Nano. Nano is very price sensitive product and this rise will not be good.
3) Multiair engines are not very good performers at high rpm. Variable valve timing offered by Japs are better for high rpm. But this engine is good for lower end torque. Good for cities in EU, but for India, the cost will go up, so IMHO, no chance of getting this engine here.
I was watching this auto show on TV. There was atleast one thing I could agree with. According to experts, future passenger cars are going to be driven by smaller turbo charged engines with better emission norms with 1.6 capping the max. Can't say how far this prediction can hold true, but looking at the auto scene today in two of the world's most populous nation's this statement does have some merit in it.
Whether or not this engine will become a national engine like the 1.3multijet, will be decided only by the economics and not by views. Interesting times ahead though.

Fiat Powertrain Technologies will unveil its next-generation engine at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. The TWIN-AIR engine features Fiat's electro-hydraulic valve management MultiAir system combined with special fluid dynamics optimised for the best fuel efficiency. This two-cylinder turbocharged 1.2-litre 8V motor range will deliver between 48kW (65 PS) and 77kW (105 PS) and is said to release up to just 95 g/km in CO2 emissions. Maximum torque is available at very low revs per minute.
Because it is so compact in size, approximately 23% shorter and 10% lighter compared to a 4-cylinder of equal performance and displacement, extra applications being considered for it include hybrid technology or a methane fuel feed.
The first car to get the TWIN-AIR engine will be the Fiat 500. Available in July, the TWIN-AIR 500 produces 85 PS consumes 15% less fuel and has 25% more performance than the 1.2-liter 8v which achieves in the combined cycle 5.1 L/100 km (55 mpg imp / 46 mpg US). Compared to the 1.4 16-valve which achieves 6.3 L/100 km (45 mpg imp / 37 mpg US) fuel consumption drops 30%.
