Year of the Recalls - Now its Bentley's turn

Luxury car firm Bentley is recalling hundreds of vehicles over fears that its "Flying B" hood ornament could impale pedestrians.

The recall affects 620 cars in the U.S. and Canada and a total of 1,436 worldwide, the company told msnbc.com.

It covers the Arnage, Azure and Brooklands models sold between October 2006 and October 2009 for suggested retail prices of $246,999 to $363,000.

The winged B is meant to retract if there is a collision, but the U.K.-based Bentley Motors said it had discovered the mechanism needed to be better protected against rust and corrosion.

It informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration which isssued a recall notice in the United States.

Fixed in an hour

Richard Durbin, a spokesman for Bentley, said the B itself was not an issue and would not be removed from the cars.

"If the car is involved in a collision, the B will [normally] automatically retract," Durbin said.

The problem was "the mechanism which causes that retraction, which in certain cases one can see ... wouldn't retract as quickly as it should," he added.

"There is a new retraction system, which is better protected against corrosion and rust," he said. "We have all the customers contact details and we will get back in contact with them. We have built a new mechanism which can be fitted in an hour."

The problem with the retraction system was spotted by a car sales firm in the U.K. and Durbin said Bentley was unaware of any accidents in which a pedestrian had actually been impaled.

Looks like some new trend setting up with the recalls. They also added that its a preventive recall..

good pro-active measure by the Luxury Marque.
Good manners of this kind are to be expected I imagine, from one of the only real "bespoke" marques in the world!

so honda too Making a Debut here ...

Source - Honda recalls 528,000 vehicles, mainly in US - The Times of India

Quote:
DETROIT: Honda Motor Co Ltd said on Friday it was recalling 528,000 vehicles worldwide due to potential problems with a master brake cylinder seal. Most of the recalled vehicles are Odyssey minivans sold in the United States.

The recall is similar to one issued on Thursday by Toyota Motor Corp for about 1.5 million vehicles worldwide. The same supplier, ADVICS Co Ltd, a privately held Japanese company with a unit in the United States, made the seals for both major automakers. No accidents or injuries have been reported due to to the faulty seals.

Of the Honda recalls, 435,000 of them are Odyssey minivans sold in the United States. A smaller number of Acura RL sedans sold around the world is involved in the Honda recall. As in the Toyota recall, Honda says the seals may fail and cause brake fluid to leak if factory-issued brake fluid is replaced with fluid that is not "factory-issue."

A change in the way the supplier makes the seals was made after the vehicles affected by the recall were produced. The new seals allow for a wide range of brake fluids without causing leaks, Toyota said on Thursday.

A Honda spokeswoman said the automaker will in the next couple of months tell customers to bring cars to dealerships for repairs. If the dashboard brake warning light is illuminated, drivers are asked to bring their autos to dealerships immediately, she said.

Toyota also recalled another 134,000 vehicles in China on Thursday for a separate issue. Honda did not say how much the repairs will cost the company.

Source - Volkswagen recalls more than 228,000 cars in US - The Times of India

Quote:
NEW YORK: Volkswagen has recalled more than 228,000 vehicles in the United States amid fears that faults could cause the vehicles' engines to catch fire.

The German carmaker recalled Jetta, Jetta Sportwagen, Golf and Rabbit models manufactured between 2007 and 2009 due to a small plastic tab that could cause a leak in the fuel pipe, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in a statement.

VW further recalled the New Beetle and New Beetle convertible vehicles equipped with 2.5 liter engines made between 2006 and 2010, which have a clamp in the power steering system that could also pierce the fuel supply line.

"If chafing occurs, there is the potential for a fuel leak to develop. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in fire," the NHTSA said.

Some 228,236 cars could be affected by the recall, it said.

Honda to recall 1.35 million Fit subcompacts globally

Quote:
TOKYO (Reuters) – Honda Motor Co said on Thursday it would recall about 1.35 million Fit subcompacts globally to repair defective wiring in the headlights.

No accident was reported from the defect, a Honda spokesman in Tokyo said.

Subject to the recall are Fit cars built at Honda's Suzuka factory in Japan between November 2001 and October 2007. About 735,000 units will be recalled in Japan, where the Fit is the second most popular car behind Toyota Motor Corp's Prius, excluding 660cc minivehicles.

Honda will also recall 143,000 Fits exported to the United States, and 385,000 units in Europe, where the model is called the Jazz. The car will also be recalled in the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

In Japan, the recall will cost about 3.6 billion yen ($43 million) and will have negligible impact on Honda's earnings, the spokesman said.

Volkswagen Recalls 377,286 Cars to Repair Risk of Fire in Fuel-Supply Line

Volkswagen AG is recalling 377,286 cars in the U.S., including Beetle and Jetta models, citing fire risk from fuel-supply lines that may chafe and leak.
Volkswagen, based in Wolfsburg, Germany, is recalling Jetta, Jetta SportWagen, Golf, Rabbit, New Beetle and New Beetle Convertible cars, it said in a letter posted today on the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website.
“It’s a voluntary safety recall,” said Kerry Christopher, a spokesman for Volkswagen at its U.S. headquarters in Herndon, Virginia. “There haven’t been any reports of injuries or fires that have resulted from this.”
The recall applies to model years 2007 to 2009 of Jettas, Golfs and Rabbits and model years 2006 to 2010 of Beetles.
Some Jettas from the 2009 model year are also under investigation by the U.S. auto-safety regulator after it received reports of engines stalling without warning while the cars are moving.

Re: Volkswagen Recalls 377,286 Cars to Repair Risk of Fire in Fuel-Supply Line

Now this has become a fancy factor, last week it was Honda recalling Jazz/Fit and this week it is VW.

Good point that they care for their customers however I would say this is a quality failure they were suppose to identify this in the testing phase. Not sure how many got fired in VW for this recall

Re: The Global *Recalls* Thread

I remember few days back reading in TOI about Nissan recalling a few thousand cars exported to Europe due to noise in the fuel pump (or was it something else).

Did anyone happened to read the article? Can some one provide any further information on this?
