A Feast For The Eyes - Top 10 Supercars! (2000-2009)

Now that we are starting a new decade, it’s time to look back and see which supercars really made the last decade.
.
.
.
.
.
10. Saleen S7 Twin Turbo
Top speed: 248 mph (399 km/h), 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) 2.8 seconds. Weight: 2750 lbs (1247 kg). Steve Saleen introduced the limited-production, hand-built S7 on August 19, 2000 at the Monterey Historic Races. Until 2004 it featured a naturally aspirated 7.0-liter V8 engine with 550 horsepower. In 2005, the S7 was replaced by the S7 Twin Turbo, which featured the same engine with twin-turbo system packing 750 horsepower.
The body of the S7 was entirely made form carbon fiber and until today it is the only car produced by Saleen not based on an existing chassis. Base price for the S7 TT was $585,296 and it was produced in 2005 and 2006 in very limited numbers.

9. Mercedes-Benz SLR 722
Top speed: 209 mph (337 km/h), 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 3.6 seconds. Weight: 3900 lbs ( 1768 kg)
The SLR range was started in 2004 by Mercedes-Benz and McLaren. Five variants in the SLR family have been produced – two coupés, two roadster versions and finally the SLR Stirling Moss, which is the most exclusive and limited to just 75 examples.
Regular SLR(Coupe and Roadster) has a 5.5-litre V8 supercharged making 626 hp, in the 722 Edition and Stirling Moss version it produces 650 hp. Pricing for the regular SLR started at around $495,000 and the very limited Stirling Moss, which just recently went on sale is priced from $1 million.

8. Aston Martin DBS
Top speed: 191 mph (307 km/h), 0-60 mph (0-100 km/h) in 4.2 seconds. Weight: 3737 lbs (1695 kg).
Aston Martin launched the DBS in 2007, in the heart of this GT sports car is a hand built V12 engine that produces 501 horsepower. In addition to the coupe there is also a convertible version called Volante, which was introduced earlier this year. Base price for this beautiful Aston starts at $269,000, making it one of the cheapest cars in our list.

7. SSC Ultimate Aero
Top speed: 270 mph (434 km/h), 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) in 2.8 seconds. Weight: 2850 lbs (1293 kg).
Power comes from a 6.4-liter twin-turbo V8 that develops 1,287 horsepower. Stopping a car going over 250 mph is not easy, so 2009 year model has an AeroBrake to slow the vehicle down.
2008 model year had 1183 hp and it successfully held the “World’s Fastest Production Car” title last year. Now with extra 104 horsepower it is even harder for competitors to snatch the title. Despite being the “fastest production car” it does not impress as much as some of the other cars in our list.

6. Lamborghini Reventon
Top speed: 211 mph (340 km/h), 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) in 3.3 seconds. Weight: 3671 lbs (1665 kg).
Based on the Murcielago, this stealth fighter inspired supercar is very rare. Lamborghini only produced 20 cars(plus one for the Lamborghini Museum marked as 0/20).
Reventon was priced at 1 million euros ($1.5 million). Power comes from a tuned version of the Murciélago LP640’s 6.5 L V-12, rated at 640 hp.
Last fall at the Frankfurt Auto Show, Lamborghini introduced Reventon Roadster, which is also limited to just 20 units and can be yours for 1.1 million euros.

5. Koenigsegg CCXR
Top speed: 250+ mph (400+ km/h). 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 3.1 seconds. Weight: 2822 lbs (1280 kg).
Price starts at: $1,200,000 (870,000 Euros).
CCXR is the first green supercar. When run on regular gasoline, the 4.7-liter twin-turbocharged engine develops 806 horsepower, when run on E85 Biofuel it develops an impressive 1018 horsepower. In 2009 Koenigsegg produced 25 units, it takes around 55 days to complete one car.

4. Pagani Zonda Cinque
Top speed: 217 mph (350 km/h), 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 3.4 seconds. Weight: 2667 lbs (1210 kg).
Pagani introduced the first Zonda back in 1999 and so far 115 different Zonda’s have been produced. Top of the line model is a Zonda Cinque, which is limited to just 10 cars (5 hard top models and 5 roadsters). Power comes from an AMG sourced V12 engine that produces 678 horsepower.
The Zonda Cinque uses a new clutchless sequential gearbox, shifts now take less than 100 milliseconds. The Cinque (pronounced chin-kway) also has a revised form of carbon fiber which uses titanium to increase strength.
All cars were sold out very fast with prices starting at 1.3 million Euros ($1.8 million USD).

3. Porsche Carrera GT
Top speed: 205+ mph (330 km/h), 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) in 3.9 seconds. Weight: 2000 lbs (1380 kg).
Between 2004–2006 and 1,270 cars were produced. Base price was $440,000. Porsche’s performance numbers have always been very modest, road tests in reality indicate that it can accelerate form 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds.
Power comes from a mid-mounted 5.7-liter V10 engine that produces 605 horsepower. CGT came only with a six-speed manual transmission. Basic five colour paint scheme includes Guards Red, Fayence Yellow, Basalt Black, GT Silver and Seal Grey. Custom colours were also available from the factory. Rumor has it that Porsche is working on a successor to the CGT, which should arrive in 2-3 years.

2. Ferrari Enzo
Top speed: 219 mph (350 km/h), 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) in 3.3 seconds. Weight: 3010 lbs (1365 kg)
Named after the company’s founder, Enzo Ferrari. It is one of the most powerful naturally aspirated production cars. Ferrari built 400 examples between 2002–2004, initial production run of 349 cars was sold before the production began to existing Ferrari owners. Ferrari Enzo features carbon-fiber body, F1-style electrohydraulic shift transmission, and carbon fiber-reinforced Silicon Carbide ceramic composite disc brakes. In the heart of Enzo is a 6.0-liter V12 that produces 650 horsepower at 7800 rpm.
Base price for the Enzo was $670000, and today if they come to the market trade above $1,000,000. Successor to the Enzo will arrive in 2012.

1. Bugatti Veyron
Top speed: 253 mph (407 km/h), 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) in 2.5 seconds. Weight: 4486 lbs (2034 kg)
Base price: €1,100,000 (£899,000/$1,550,000).
Veyron is the most taled supercar of this decade and for a reason. Sales started in 2005 and close to 300 units are sold so far. Reportedly every car is sold with a great loss, despite its very high cost. Total production is 300 units plus limited editions(you can read about the recent limited editions here). Power comes from a 8.0-liter 16 cylinder quad-turbocharged engine that develops 1001 horsepower and 1250 Nm of torque.
Jeremy Clarkson declared the Veyron “the greatest piece of engineering ever. No, I’m sorry, this is the greatest car ever made and the greatest car we will ever see in our lifetime.”

Anyway, very good list at the end of the day. Enjoyed reading it. Can anyone explain the sentence quoted above? Sale of Veyron with great loss???

I'm sorry Ace,

I helped compile the photographs and information (Top speed, acceleration, price, etc..) but the text was compiled by someone else. What he means is, with each Veyron sold, Bugatti/VW incurs a loss as the cost of development and testing the Veyron was quite a lot and despite selling them, they will not profit from it!

P.S. I request the moderators to help me edit the few grammatical errors that might be present in this piece.

No worries from my side Suhaas. As I said earlier, it was interesting to read this list. I know that VW had spent a lot of money on Veyron's development just to make it the fastest car in the world. Furthermore, with the rest that it excels from its competitors as an overall package by delivering the goodies that others don't offer.

But I am still not able to digest that VW is loosing money after selling more than 300 Veyrons. To me, it has been very successful project for them. Any idea how much did they spend on R&D for Veyron?

Well, it's true Ace, at least from what I've read it's quite true. The base price of a Veyron is $1,500,000! So, if Bugatti/VW haven't profited from the sales of this car, imagine how much money would've been pumped in to engineer and produce this Super Car!

On a different note, I already have most of these beautiful wallpapers. 3rd pic of the Koenigsegg CCXR is seriously mind blowing. Car looks so aggressive.

Didn't Hammond once mention on TG that spreading out the development costs and overheads, each Veyron costs almost $5 million to make, and than they're selling at $1.5m a pop. So imagine how much money they're losing.

Yes, true. Veyron's are sold at a loss as per Topgear and others second it.

Missing Mclaren F1 in the list. it was the ultimate super car till the Veyron surfaced.

Nice list & great pics

Though I have very little knowledge about supercars, I wonder if the Aston Martin should be there.

Thanks for the link Maverick. Many sources suggesting cost of Veyron to be around £5 million, then it should be true. Just made a simple calculation, if VW sold about 300 Veyrons so far, they have lost £1.25 billion.

And F1 is not in the list because this is the list from last decade i.e. 2000 to 2009 (inclusive). Mclaren F1 was the ultimate supercar car between 1990 to 1999.
