So what's BMW's strategy here? I fail to understand. If the normal M3 has parts taken from the CSL, why have a CSL? The CSL was supposed to be a hardcore version of the M3, with lighter, upgraded and better parts. So, if i'm getting those parts in a normal M3, why would i buy a CSL?

I guess the CSL has its uniqueness like cardboard boot, nearly bald tyres, and other weight reducing materials!!! So thats the reason u buy a CSL..

If BMW is really that serious about making a track car, they should think in terms of a 2 seater, mid engined, RWD car. Something like the M1. The CSL is afterall a sedan and all sedans have their limitations.

The M3 was never built to run rings around Modenas or Carreras or even other track cars. It was meant to be a practical 2-door 4 seater (if you'd like to call it) which one could take to the track as well as run to office in everyday.

It'd have been great to have them create a real light track car, but then its BMW philosophy to create sporty cars out of road-going cars. Shan2nu, we can wish BMW to think like the japs or the british cottage car industry, but i guess Bavarians are hard nuts at the end of the day.

Well, the old gen CSL is already out and sold (though there is some old stock at dealers). Its a legend...why not use some of its strengths in the new model?
