they are pretty much the same once you add the options on pilot, specially the driver assistance and comfort (honda sensing).

if you go thru the logic of purchase vs buy, MDX actually comes cheaper since it's residual value is high.

Here is what I quickly came up with pilot lease. I pay less than 500 with 3K down payment on my MDX.

As for Competition, very few cars beat MDX on value, RX350 costs way more than a similarly equipped MDX with just 2 rows of seating.
If at all they are introducing the Turbo V6 in MDX with Honda's 10 speed auto, then it should be one killer SUV in that segment. Already reviewers are praising the 10 speed auto that Honda introduced in the New Accord and Odyssey higher trim levels.

As far as the competition goes, I understand that Acura with its Super Handling AWD makes very good value for money. But the sales numbers are completely on the opposite scale. People having $50k and looking for a Luxury SUV are just flocking the RX350. Reliability and Resale value are really the forte of Lexus. Especially the RX and ES.

True, RX350 sells almost double numbers over MDX which means Acura is more desperate which means more value for customers

Re: Buying, Owning, Driving and Maintaining a car in North America

Infiniti has come up with something interesting in their new QX50 SUV for 2019. The 2.0L engines comes with variable compression turbo (VC-T) which is something new to the mass market cars. The engine is able to transition the compression ratio from 8:1 to 14:1 according to the need. Lets wait and see the long term reliability of this engine.

I would like your opinion on selecting a compact luxury cross over!
Im confused between the Audi Q5 and the Volvo XC 60.
Are there other choices that I missed and worth looking at?

I got a Chevy Malibu for a recent rental. Great car - faaast and comfortable, but emptied its tank like it had hole in it. Display showed spectacular fuel efficency of 32+ mpg , website shows 16 gallon tank (but top up from half took about 5+ gallons only). Curious case.

There are plenty of choices as mentioned below, spend enough time on your shortlists before finalizing.
Acura RDX
Lexus NX / RX
Infiniti QX50 (depending on how long you can wait)
Porsche Macan (tight rear space)
BMW X3
Mercedes Benz GLC
Jaguar F-Pace
Lincoln MKC
Land Rover Discovery Sport

Consider Mazda too, the refreshed CX-5 & CX-9 (very nice interior).

Both are very good choices. Previous gen Volvo's are reliable but lacks the badge value of other German 3 and it will affect the resale of the car. My friend had a tough time in selling his Volvo S60. Audi has all the bling and the new Q5 is another worthy competitor. But if you want good resale and solid reliability consider the Lexus NX. It might not have that oomph factor.

If you can wait, 2019 RDX seems like a very good bet. Don't go for current gen RDX though.

I would stay away from the new 2019 QX50. This car comes with Variable Compression Turbo which is something new for mass market and reliability is something unknown for this car.

CX-5 is very good choice. But I think he is looking more into the Luxury segment.

Re: Buying, Owning, Driving and Maintaining a car in North America

Anyone in the market for a XC60 right now? Was interested in knowing what kind of pricing dealers are offering.

I have been trying to stitch down a deal on 2018 T6 Inscription and the best I have got is 7% off MSRP from a NJ dealer. They do have a hefty document fee of $600 though which they are sticking to. I am set on a specific configuration and only 1 dealer in my 300 mile radius has that which is limiting my negotiating room.

Was interested in doing a OSD but Volvo exhausted all their 2018 OSD slots by 25th January!

I'm not sure if you already bought the car, but for the Novi winters (yes I have driven there too), I would whole-heartedly recommend the Subaru Forester. It's extremely practical, unless you have a large family. You are going to have fun passing all the FWD cars in the right lane during a snowstorm. However, pre-owned Subarus are quite steeply priced, so maybe make a stretch if you can, and get a new one. If you are working for one of the big names in Novi area, it should not be a hassle to get a loan.

Re: Buying, Owning, Driving and Maintaining a car in North America

Mention your location. - Norwalk, CT
Approximate price range / budget. 10K +/- 4K
Maintenance & After Sales Service (A.S.S.) expectations. Looking at a local specialist. As an Indica owner, my expectations are low, I am ok with Investing in preventive maintenance. I expect to have a fully functional car all the time, and don't want to face issues with parts availability etc.
List cars short listed.
Civic Si (Leading Contender)
Focus ST( Ford Maintenence? reliability? Resale?)
Fiesta ST(Folks Saying it will be too small
Subaru Impreza/ Legacy( AWD!)
Acura/Lexus sedans in budget
Average distance traveled per month 1K Miles monthly (though this could change)
Where car will be mostly used (mix of city and highway).
Specific requirements from car (High Resale, Low Cost of Ownership, Family Carrying Capacity ( Baby seat + Stroller etc) )
I am conflicted on Manual vs Auto and Big Car vs Small. I would prefer manual and small, but have been advised that I will need Auto and Big in america. Auto mostly from the resale angle - which i am planning to avoid by going the premium manual route (Civic Si etc). But Large vs Small is still up in the air. I personally find driving big cars in india rather unwieldly, and even when i take rides in friends civics, they feel like barges, and I feel I would be happy with a small hatch (mini cooper, Fiesta ST), but have gotten mixed feedback, with some saying you need to go big in the US, while others said its perfectly fine to start small as long as it fits your requirements.
How long you intend to keep the car (2-3 Years - that's how long my visa is )

Thoughts welcome.
I am not planning to buy a car immediately. Getting a license in CT Takes a fair amount of time. The objective of this post is to sort out my priorities, so that i Can start stalking local Carmax and dealer CPO inventories to track availability, demand and pricing trends to make a quick and informed decision once the time comes

Re: Buying, Owning, Driving and Maintaining a car in North America

Just stepped into the Luxury Segment.
Bought a 2018 Audi Q5 in the premium Plus package with some extras.
Got a good deal due to month end sales.

I looked at the XC 60 too and it was a close contender to the Q5 but the simple, elegant and practical finish on the Q5 won me over.
Also the Q5 got a better fuel efficiency rating than the XC 60 and had better discounts.

Apart from all this, im fortunate as per a car enthusiast. Audi, Mercedes and BMW showrooms are just across the road from my place (owned by same group). Its a treat everyday!

I will share my experience. I came with Wagon R experience. I picked up a used Honda Civic manual, done 19000 miles. I find it spacious enough and it offers all bells and whistles I need such as bluetooth, cruise and standard safety features. If I want to sell this manual, I wont get many buyers. Once I thought of selling it and moving up, I got less than 10 queries over 2 months. I have decided to keep it and enjoy the shifts. I have seen more buyers and sellers for Si for sure. I use civic for 1000 mile one way drive atleast once every six months and it is comfortable.
Hope it helps you on Civic.
In general, manual and small here would mean premium for most people and you could go in for any high end small manuals from your list. They are all premium offerings. Lastly, Honda civic has 6 speed hatch as well, which is also a good product in case you would like to go that route.

I am in Rhode Island, so feel free to PM if you need any further connect.

thanks

I am in the market for the same segment. Was set on XC60 till I test drove a T6 and hated the lag in acceleration from stop. Now looking at Q5 and GLC as well. Can you please share the approximate discount you got on the Q5? On the XC60 I have managed to get 8% off MSRP on a fully loaded T6 Inscription with all options.

I initially got a discount of 6% but then I bargained to a 10% discount on a car that was on the lot.
This is the best time since it is the month end and they would like to move cars off the lot.
