• Power take-off (option): 1000 Nm at a standstill, 650 Nm on the move.
• Available with open or closed crankcase ventilation.

Despite appalling sales figures towards the end of the year, with an apocalyptic drop of 99.7% in Europe, Volvo Trucks keep paddling for their survival and they are doing it in Swarovski-studded rafts so to speak as the Swedes have recently premiered the most powerful series-manufactured truck.

With a lion roaring 700 hp and 3150 Nm of torque, the new FH16 stands as Volvo's latest flagship and is aimed at customers who have huge transporting needs.

“The Volvo FH16 is intended for the very heaviest and most demanding of transport operations. It is also a highly prestigious truck for the customer who is looking for something truly out of the ordinary. And with 700 hp, the Volvo FH16 sets itself apart from everything else in the industry,” says Staffan Jufors, President and CEO of Volvo Trucks.

“Our aim is to have both the best performance and the best fuel economy in the segment. We have succeeded in keeping fuel consumption the same as before despite the power increase. In a comparison with the competition, we are doing very well indeed,” he added.

Surprisingly, the Volvo FH16 is certified for the new Euro 5 European emission requirements that come into force in autumn 2009. As Volvo mentions in the press release, this means that nitrogen oxide have been cut by more than 40 percent. Even if you are not a big Volvo fan, you must stand up and with tears in your eyes salute this achievement.

Of course, the FH16 also comes with less powerful versions outputting 540 and 600 hp, respectively, but why not leave other truckers to shame when your 700 hp propel the Zeus of all trucks like an F1 car.

Speaking of the power plant, we're sure you'd appreciate some technical details. The 16-liter D16G engine is equipped as standard with a new, electronically controlled exhaust brake (EPG) with an output of 230 kW. There is also the option of the Volvo Engine Brake, VEB+, with 425 kW braking effect.

“Another important change in the two most powerful engine variants is a new and larger system for exhaust after-treatment. Since the system can handle a larger flow of exhaust gases, counter-pressure is reduced and power losses are minimised. A larger-capacity system also results in better cleaning capacity. Just as before, the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system is used, taking effective care of harmful emissions,” Volvo's statement reads.

Last but not least, the noise level during idling has been lowered by 2dB(A) with the help of pre-injection, where a small amount of fuel is sprayed into the cylinder.

just curious guys, how do you measure the power/torque generated by trucks? are there dynos powerful enough to accommodate such monsters??

The dashboard looks like cockpit of a aircraft!!!! Very hard to imagine an Indian driver in this monster.

I drove an FH (13 liter) with I-shift some time back. The experience was too good. The I-shift senses the axle load and change gears accordingly. It also has an inclination sensor to check if vehicle is going up-hill. When I drove the gearbox started of in 2nd gear was shifting two gears at a time as the truck was empty. It was a demo FH truck which I drove inside company premises (Volvo Group ME)..

Volvo makes the most beautiful trucks in my opinion!

That's one powerful truck. It does look like a regular Volvo semi, though. One might drive past one of these on some motorway and may not realise that it's a high-tech giant. Save for the tell-tale sticker on the sides, I guess
