Honestly, I've seen this feature on BBC about a decade ago - fitted on the Jag XJ40.

Great idea, but if it is on the centre console then when you are viewing it will you not be taking your eyes off the road ? So if an animal or kid runs into the road suddenly you could hit them as you are looking at your VDU.

It's interesting to note that the glare of the tail light from the bike is not seen on the display. Might prove a godsend on our roads.

Maybe aftermarket kits will hit the market of hopefully in a 2 din screen tightly integrated with a gps/carputer.

well it set me googling and here's a idea for a possible carputer camera

Here the actual videos look promising, which also shows the bmw in action

here's the bmw link.

I have this on my 530d and have used in only 3 or 4 times, its hopeless.

It's supposed to function beyond the throw of the headlamps, as your post suggests, but it does not.

I only wish they had provided paddle shifters on my 530d instead of night vision.

I have a reverse camera in the car(with no IR block). I noticed that when its very foggy, and I can barely see anything beyond 10 feet, the camera sees a good 50 feet or so! This may well be a boon during fog or rains.

i have it on my 530D highline already. Quite a useful feature especially when you are driving on dark roads.
