SLS AMG E-CELL: The gullwing going green!

Mercedes-AMG is accepting the challenges of motoring of the future: the SLS AMG E-CELL is evidence of the state-of-the-art development of an exciting super sports car featuring a zero-emission high-tech drive.

The ground-breaking drive system of the technology vehicle boasts some out-standing features: powerful traction is provided by four synchronous electric motors with a combined peak output of 392 kW and a maximum torque of 880 Nm.

The four compact electric motors each achieve a maximum rpm of 12,000/rpm and are positioned near to the wheels. As a result, compared with wheel-hub motors the unsprung masses are substantially reduced. One transmission per axle transmits the power.

When it comes to dynamics, the electrically-powered SLS AMG makes a state-ment: the gullwing model accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4 seconds – which almost puts it on the same high level as the SLS AMG with 6.3-litre V8 engine developing 420 kW (571 hp), which can accelerate to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds.

Externally, the SLS E-Cell has received a few tweaks to differentiate it from the petrol car. Aside from the radioactive paint job, the car receives energy-saving LED headlights, a wider grille and an automatically extending front splitter, which is deployed above 75mph to increase downforce at higher speeds.

Inside the E-Cell the centre console has been redesigned to accommodate instruments specifically for the electric drive system. And Mercedes has installed a huge 25cm touchscreen, replacing almost all the dashboard buttons in the process.

The interior appointments are dominated by high-quality nappa leather in a black/white colour combination – it has been used not only on the sports seats, the performance leather/alcantara steering wheel and the door linings, but also on the broad centre tunnel which runs towards the back of the vehicle between the seats.

Unlike most electric concepts, Mercedes has promised to have this on sale by 2012. Prices are still to be announced, but expect a heavy premium for this futuristic electric supercar.

I hate the colour, but that dash is fantastic... I just love the design aesthetics !! Great refreshing piece of interior design by the Mercedes team. Even the instrument cluster reeks sporty.

The colour hurts the retinas! I'd take it in a more sober colour like silver or grey. Anyway, is Mercedes targeting Hollywood's people and other celebrities by offering this 'eco' SLS? Move over, Prius

More Colors

I am sure there would be lot of colors in option when the E-cell reaches to the production so that it appeals to the "Go Green" Hollywood celebrities.

I hope this isn't just a green gimmik by Daimler. AFAIK, Daimler is busy trying to get the smart fortwo to market by 2012. The fortwo is Daimler's poster child of electric vehicles, besides focusing on battery powered hybrid versions of E- and S- Class. IMO, we will have to wait a good many years till there is an actual market for an E-Cell SLS AMG.

Also having "one more green car" in the stable increases the company's overall fleet figures for fuel efficiency.

I dug up with the name for the color - "AMG Lumilectric Mango"

Mercedes SLS Electric Drive. Can Volts Ever Match Pistons?

This week is all about celebrating electric power @ T-BHP!

4 wheels each got its own motor and very very clever torque vectoring. Mighty impressive! Enjoy the video with Chris Harris.

Car looks really impressive in the video, watched it earlier in the morning.

Chris Harris is the best car reviewer on YouTube or anywhere. Period.
