The 3 lakh rupee Renault - Lada Granta sedan

The Renault Twingo based Lada Granta sedan is to be manufactured by AutoVAZ, Renault's partner in Russia, with production beginning in 2011.

AutoVAZ plans to market the Granta in Europe as well. With the starting price as low as U.S. $ 6,200 (2.86 Lakh INR), it will make Granta the car with the lowest price ever produced in Europe.

The interesting part is that Renault has expressed interest to develop its own version of Granta and is currently negotiating the rights to sell it in overseas markets.

IMHO, with upgraded looks and interiors, it can give good competition in the bottom end of the C aka budget sedan segment .. if only they can keep the price in check.. near about the 4-4.5 lakh rupee mark.

Two pics.. the original and the other of what I think Renault's version could look like. The face is based on the 2011 Renault Latitude sedan.

Lada Granta is a major redesigned and updated Lada Kalina, which is produced by Russian automaker AutoVAZ since 2004. In the end of 2011 Granta will replace at least 3 models: ancient Lada 2105 & 2107, outdated Lada Samara II and Lada Kalina sedan, which wasn't very successful in Russian market

Hope this car never makes it to our Indian shores. It looks so ugly that it makes a Logan look like a beauty pageant winner. Haven't seen anything more disproportionate, which the Logan isn't (Its proportionate, but plain). Cost wise, wasn't Logan priced similarly in east Europe? Why is Renault so obsessed about making such cheap cars over and over again?

I disagree. These "cheap" cars may sell well in parts of Europe where they have no competition. In India however - the land of value engineering - Maruti, Tata & Mahindra are the masters of managing costs. That's why the Logan flopped; it simply could not match the Indigo's cost of manufacturing. Now, we have the awesome Manza that starts at a sub 5 lakh rupee price.

Not to mention, the Lada Granta looks like it was designed in the 80's.

+1. If these pics are anything to go by, then styling will be a big weak point for this car in India. Indian customers are already spoilt for choice with the range of current styles we have - mostly same models that are offered around the world. Hyundai's, Toyota's, Chevy's, Ford's.

You guys are right , I agree. It is ugly. And Renault will not be able to match the value for money a Tata or Maruti offers.

Maybe I have a thing for ugly budget sedans! :P

p.s. just for fun.. i tried to photoshop it into a hatch! But, then again, redesigning body panels would mean more investment and it would be even more difficult to be able to offer a VFM offering.

In European countries, people own age old 70's, 80's fiats and Rovers, they may want to afford a cheaper non fuel efficient car as it is otherwise in India. Renault makes very good cars for eg. Renault Laguna. The Renault Logan sold here is primitive redundant vehicle not suitable for modern driving style. Lada is not a well accepted brand by Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear.
