Ssangyong starts shipping Korando C

Ssangyong starts shipping Korando C-ssangyongkorandoc.jpg

The boffins at Ssangyong must have breathed a heavy sigh of relief as the company shipped its first consignment of the mid-level SUV, the Korando C from South Korea earlier this month.

Last few years have been a constant turmoil for Sangyong. Dealing with the financial crunch caused global financial crisis, labor union strikes (who brought about a war-like condition inside the facility with helicopters and battalions brought in to bring the situation under control), management restructuring, investors backing out and the company very nearly hitting bankruptcy; the management sure must have thought that the doom was near.

But despite of violent storms, the company managed to focus on development of Korando C. And finally about 450 Korando C were shipped from the Pyeongtaek International Port in Gyeonggi for Tarragona, Spain and Antwerp, Belgium.

On this glorious occasion, Lee Yoo-il, joint manager of Ssangyong, said :

The Korando C is a model that strengthens Ssangyong’s mid and long-term lineups and is a strategic model that will contribute to stabilizing the company.

The fortunes have also been turning for the company with Mahindra&Mahindra bringing in the much required financial liquidity. The company has plans to sell 10,000 SUVs though its 1,200 strong dealer network across the globe in the first year.

The Korando C comes with a 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine that makes 175PS. ABS, EBD and Airbags feature on the equipment list.

History tells us that most cars that are launched when a company nears its bankruptcy are generally brilliant cars. The Jag XF did it for Jaguar, the Cruze did it for Chevy, the Punto and 500 did it for Fiat. We hope the Korando C does it for Sangyong as well.

It reminds me of the Captiva. I quite like it, but the side sorely misses a waistline or a sharp line which could have lent the side profile some some character. Very nice and compact urban SUV, but I'm sure it'll be branded as a soccer mom car.

I think it looks pretty darn good for starters. And the other thing that struck me while I was reading the post was the practicality of this urban warrior in India. It would definitely make a good alternative if priced in the 13-16 lakh range. Also the two litre engine can be assembled locally and used in a myriad of other Mahindras too!

This is like the upmarket version of the Premier SUV,in Skoda Yeti territory.Looks pretty good but i think it has to be priced a bit lower than the yeti say12-14l and it will be perfect.

this really looks nice and functional indeed.
hope that Mahindras bring this into India for us guys to enjoy too.
And as mentioned elsewhere in the thread, if the pricing is around 12-14 it can become an instant hit.

Mahindra please bring this one with M-hawk engine; i guess that will rock the market if priced sensibly.

The Korando is one of the few sensibly styled cars in the Ssangyong stable. Similarly, M&M need to take a cue and tone down their toothy grille design.

Re: Ssangyong starts shipping Korando C

I spotted this car today near Vikhroli. For a moment I was wondering which Ssangyong is this, then stumbled upon this thread. Couldn't manage pictures as I was in company bus.

Is this undergoing testing still?

Looks very American for a Korean. Are we going to get this India any time soon? I think Mahindra should plan on getting this one here before the Rodius and price it in the 13-16L. The SUV market is hot and the Koranda looks as if it has got good potential.

Very tame front end compared to older Ssangyongs! The grille looks like it is from a Mazda and the headlights remind me of the Subaru Impreza. Not bad at all.

They have been testing it since quite some time. The Korando which i sometimes spot in South Mumbai is on Consulate plates.

If they price it in the bracket which you mentioned then their own cheetah aka XUV500 will be wounded! The car looks promising & seems like it will be priced between XUV & Rexton.

The Korando C will work well here if priced around the Scorpio top end and nudging around in the XUV space.

It will be a nice competitor to the Duster and to the Hyundai IX35 or new Tucson, whenever those come along.

Now, why don't those flobbits at Maruti consider giving us this variant which I saw on a recent trip and which has been available internationally for ages?

The baby GV with a short chassis and if possible that DDIS engine will be a wild hit here in my opinion.
