Fiat's Zagato Coupe, Freemont & Twin Air 500 at Geneva 2011

Fiat Zagato Coupe Concept

Fiat’s planned line-up for Geneva was the Freemont, Twin Air 500, the SB4 on display and the rest of the GP and Bravo gang – but something that was a bit of a wildcard entry turned out to be the real crowd puller.

Zagato had worked its design styles to make a prototype coupe version of the Fiat 500. The changes were quite subtle: the roofline drops towards the tail of the car to give it more of a curved coupe like silhouette. The tail end of the roof curves up smoothly over the rear glass to form a neat rear spoiler, while the C-pillar is a combination of body-colour and blacked out pillar to reduce the visual weight back there.

Fiat 500 Twin Air

Displayed alongside was the Fiat 500 Twin Air. Whats special about this one? Well, the engine is an inline 2-cylinder turbocharged unit (hence “twin air”) and is aimed at greatly reducing emissions and increasing fuel savings (claims of using upto 30% less fuel than the 1.4L unit also seen in the Fiat 500).

Despite having a tiny 875 cc displacement, its performance figures are still impressive at 85 hp @ 5500 rpm and 145 N-m @ 1900 rpm. In fact, that’s more torque than the 1.4 liter makes at the same rpm! 80% of the Twin Air’s max torque is available at 1,500 rpm, and thanks to the small turbo, lag should be well controlled too. This translates to a sub-11 second 0 -100 time.

Mefistofele

Placed at the back of the Fiat stall was a 1908 Fiat SB4. Ironic, because this thing has an engine 24 times the size of the Twin Air. This particular car had been rebuilt in 1924 to earn itself the land speed record of 235 km/h. With a Fiat aircraft engine wedged in under the long hood, the specs were quite unlike any other car at the show. A 21,706 cc (yes, 21 Liter), 6 cylinder engine, churning out 320 hp. A compression ratio of 4.8:1, a chain to drive the rear wheels, a single brake on the rear differential, and a 2-ton curb weight. Yes, they say it shoots flames out of the exhaust. Too bad about the high emissions.

Fiat Freemont

What’s the fastest growing European segment? Crossovers.
What did Fiat have on offer for that segment? Nothing.

Enter the Freemont. A product of the Fiat-Chyrsler relationship. Its in no major disguise, a Dodge Journey. A rare case of an American car being re-badged as something else, rather than the other way around!

In person, it’s a lot bigger than most photos would have you believe. Three rows of seating make it a 7-seater, and the rear seats can fold down flat into the floor freeing up some loading space. It is powered by Fiat’s 140 & 170 hp Multijet diesel engines and will have a 4x4 version out in Europe by the year end.

The Freemont is the first of 7 brand new models that Fiat plans to add to their line-up by the end of 2013.

Alfa Romeo 4C concept

Since its part of the Fiat group of companies, I thought I’d make a mention of the Alfa Romeo 4C concept here too.

Personally, I found it to be a strange mix of familiar cars (Elise, Solstice, etc) with an Alfa grill. However, everyone else I spoke to at the show just seemed to LOVE it, so I thought I’d point it out here.

Its still a concept, but its touting stats like a <5 second 0-100 km/h, and 200 hp… from a 2-cylinder turbocharged engine. Check it out :

Lovely shots Rehaan. The Alfa 4C is a complete drool material. I really hope Fiat works on the Dodge Journey to make it better, because they are shoddily built, atleast in America.

A much awaited thread (at least for me) Rehaan. Loved your pics too. Regarding the freemont, to which cross over in Indian scenario can it be compared? How did you feel the interior? Do you have any pics of it? The 500 looks awesome.

The 4C didn't tug at my heart strings. Expected better from Alfa...like a baby F430? I'll take a MiTo anyday.

Just when you think the Fiat 500 couldn't look any better, Zagato pulls off a stunner. I loved it.

It also seems that Fiat would be betting their heart out on their new Multi-air engines as much as they did on their successful multijet line. Hoping to see those engines in Maruti cars soon.

True. Also wonder why they couldn't make a few tweaks to the design ?
Not exactly eye-catching, the freemont.

Nice Pics there,
I really loved the Freemont but missed some interior pics here
The alloys on freemont resemble an expanded verse of the ones on Punto
But when freemont comes to india, it will be mostly in the 20L price range

Re: Fiat's Zagato Coupe, Freemont & Twin Air 500 at Geneva 2011

Hi Guys,

Lots of questions about the interiors of the Freemont!

Here's what the CEO of Fiat Automobiles had said in his speech regarding the same :

My pictures of the interiors came out awful, so here are the photos from the press kit. Clearly its a big step up from the Dodge Journey (which has a very awkward and outdated looking dash) :

Great to see Fiat enter American Markets with Freemonth and Twin Air.
The Chrysler Alliance should do good as Fiat returns to American soil after many years.

The 500 looks super cool and the matt finish paint job on the Alfa looks real good in the pics. How did it look actually Rehaan ? Does it feel like regular paint to touch ?

Maruti / Suzuki will not get any of Fiat's new engines. The were getting all this tech through GM, who had a stake in Fiat which does not exist anymore and even the Suzuki-GM relationship is over after the new VW stake/relationship

Those have got to be one of the hottest alloys on a hatchback I have seen.
