Autocar UK have reported that Mercedes Benz has confirmed on a baby SUV (Mercedes GLC) to rival BMW X1. According to the news piece, the new car is set to go on sale in the UK in 2013.

This looks something close to a SUV where the X1 looses hands down. This would easily be a winner vs the BMW X1 if it is priced right AND has diesels as an option, powerful ones at that !! Is this an AWD or just the rear ?? Any more details would be nice.

Kudos to the Tri-Star. I am no fan of the ML but this seems to cut it right !!

It sure looks better than the X1, more aggresive and better styling. Overall looks more compact, less lengthy but more broader.

Indeed! the car has loads of character. While BMW is getting a bit soft on the new cars (post Bangle era), Merc is going in the opposite direction, and coming up with aggressive looking cars. I kind of like their new designs

Not sure if its as good handler as the X1, but it sure looks much..much better.

Correction, GLK is pitched against the X3 and Q5, not the X1. Like X6, X1 seems to a BMW-built segment

ML goes against X5 and Q7.

Q7 starts at $46,000(base model) which is same as ML which starts at $46,500 (base model).

GL starts at $61,000 (base model) and it goes against LC and RR.

In my understading, the M and GL are big SUVs, and in India, it is in competition with the likes of Audi Q7 and BMW X5. GL is longer than the M, and can seat 7, whereas M is strictly a 5-seater.

Back to the topic, the car mentioned here is a baby SUV, and is directly aimed at the X1 (as Scorcher mentioned, at now, it is all by its own).

I guess, customers are going to be benefited by this competition.
1) Competition is always good
2) If there are more German premium cars in the X1 CE price range, other players (e.g.; Skoda Yeti) will start feeling the heat, and maybe forced to realign the prices.

Size wise it is roughly:
Q5=X3 < ML Class (5 seats) < R Class (6 seats) < X5 (7 Seats) < Q7 (7 Seats) < GL Class (7 Seats)

There were 2 addtional optional seats in the M Class prior to 2006 when though the Car grew bigger it ditched the last row.

The new proposed Merc is in the X1 segment overall, but looks to be somewhere between the X1 and X3 interms of size.
