Schumi has formally announced that he will retire from F1 at the end of the season - Martin Brindle tweets.

But is he quitting F1 or just the Mercedes team? Such a sad way to retire for a legend. Wish he had got the right car and showed us some magic this season. :(

Re: Michael Schumacher retiring at the end of 2012

That pretty much makes it clear that he is retiring from F1.

Quote:
"Although I am still able to compete with the best drivers, at some point it is good to say goodbye," he said.
"During the past month I was not sure if I still had the motivation and energy which is necessary to go on.
"It is not my style to go on if I'm not 100% with it but with today's decision I feel relieved."

Yes, confirmed at planetf1 too !

That's a shame. Merc could not provide the car to him. How I wish he gets into a McLaren or an RBR and we can see the old fox take the battle to the young turks.

It will be nice if he gets onto a management role...

There was no other option. Sensible move on his part. I have a feeling that he may not entirely disappear from the F1 scene. For the time being maybe but he is going to be around is what I feel.

Lewis replacing Schumacher at Mercedes next year !!!
Just in --> http://goo.gl/heby5

Although hindsight vision is always 6/6, still, the Hamilton tweet (of telemetry screen shot of comparison of the McLarens) was, to me, a strong enough indication that a switch away from the team was eminent.

Hamilton says here http://goo.gl/70naO that Mercedes is 'more exciting' !!

As per the latest update on AMG Petronas FB page, schumi is hanging up his helmet at the end of the season. We still love you Schumi you are the best and the greatest ever..

In hindsight, one has to admit his comeback has been a failure and slightly diminished his legend status.
He has been beaten by his team mate 3 years in a row, which was unthinkable earlier.

But ofcourse, he will always remain a 7 time WDC.

Re: Michael Schumacher retiring at the end of 2012

He still has it no doubt. The pole in Monaco would have been a sure shot victory had it not been for that 5 place penalty. I do wish to see a last hurrah - atleast another podium from him before he retires. After that, i am switching loyalties to the ice-man.

+1000 to that. You echo my words. I hope he will be able to be on the podium once before he hangs his helmet.

And the doubts have been put to rest.

Schumacher to retire from F1, again. The keyword being, again.

Re: Michael Schumacher retiring at the end of 2012

Is this is final announcement? . Wonder he may come back for 2014 or 2015 season as he did before. I really feel that his comeback post retirement taking sheen away from his earlier achievements.

Re: Michael Schumacher retiring at the end of 2012

Clearly after reading what he said, it is clear he was unhappy with the fact that he did not get a quick car. I think he made up his mind in 2009 before joining, its a 3 year contract with merc, if it does not work out i'll hang my boots again.

He has options like Lotus and Ferrari, he just needs to show interest and he'll get the drive, its just that he does not want to continue which is fair enough..

It is not an easy job to be racing for so long, this sport has a lot of mental and physcial stress involved.
