Re: 2012 F1 - Circuit of the Americas

Exciting qualifying

Vettel breezes to yet another Pole, all the best for him to win the WDC on the old engine.

Michael Schumacher seems to have got the maximum out of his Donkey, and the old man looks in supreme touch, wish he would have switched to RBR or Ferrari on his return.

Anyone here can tell, who's got penalty and who are dropping down places in the grid...?

Its gonna be the one who goes ahead into turn 1. Hard for Hammy, being on the dirty side, but I hope he clips Vettel's rear tyre or something and puts him out for good (without major front wing damage - wishful thinking, but not impossible! :-) ). Hammy wins, Alonso scores anywhere close to 10 points or greater, lives to fight another day at Brazil. Win-win.

Grosjean 5 places down to 9th for gearbox change. Moves everyone up one place. Will cause butterflies in Alonso's stomach who starts from 8th!

Re: 2012 F1 - Circuit of the Americas

Sorry guys -- didn't get to see qualifying in full as traffic had other plans for us. The circuit was overwhelmed with a sea of fans, especially tifosi. The inaugural GPs are always a major pain for fans .

However, in addition to seeing Q3 of qualifying (didn't click pics then), I did get to see the follow-up; Ferrari Challenge.

The 458s were monstrously fast, but something about them put me off, the downshifts were harsh and really unpleasant to the ears.

Re: 2012 F1 - Circuit of the Americas

Apart from all of this, I don't think tomorrow's race will be any special. The WDC is more or less wrapped up now, but as Alonso says, anything can happen.

By the way, turn 1 is much more ridiculous than what you it appears on TV for you -- it is by for the most ridiculous turn in F1. It's as if Tilke modeled it after the ghats of Tirupati or incline on a roller coaster.

Also, missing some of qualifying allowed other opportunities.

Re: 2012 F1 - Circuit of the Americas

If Hamilton left a underperforming McLaren team, why should Alonso stick with an underperforming Ferrari team? Their updates seem to be downgrades these days.
My two pennies!

He'll be there till kingdom come.
One's that can afford him are too cohesive right now.
Ones that aren't have no money.
McLaren is slightly split, but no way will they ever sign Alonso again.

and Maldonado starts @ P10. So getting away untouched from these two will be the first challenge for Alonso.

Re: 2012 F1 - Circuit of the Americas

I too think that Turn 1 is a little over done. It would be stupid if that causes half the cars to crash out during the first curve.

Re: 2012 F1 - Circuit of the Americas

Turn1 might be tricky, the track is very dirty and cars off the racing line will slide like they are on ice.

Its going to be a long race, more like a procession and Vettel might be crowned champion in US of A!

The Ferraris are struggling with getting heat into their tires, check Massa's Q2 time. Its wierd, but its only Vettel who is able to switch on the tires from Lap1 while no one else on the grid is able to

Re: 2012 F1 - Circuit of the Americas

Guys off the racing line (Hamilton, Alonso, Kimi) will find the start very tough.

Also, it looks like coming off the racing line to overtake someone is going to be very difficult. Else, the guy in front should be forced to make a mistake.

Pirelli went really conservative with the tyres.

Re: 2012 F1 - Circuit of the Americas

Vettel pretty much has the championship sown up, unless he has an incident in the final two races. Starting from 8th is not ideal for Alonso, but he can now go for broke. Hamilton will be looking to finish off on a high with McLaren and put the disappointment of the last race behind him. All in all, I think we have an exciting first race in Austin ahead of us today!

Re: 2012 F1 - Circuit of the Americas

Ferrari considering changing Massa's gearbox, which would put Alonso on cleaner side, which seems to be a big deal.
