Re: Artificial sound in F1, 2014

The 2014 Renault engine is out. And it sounds the same as it looks. Dull and mediocre!

The way it sounds

The way it looks

I hope at least Andy Cowell keeps us his word.

Not entirely related to this thread, but couldn't decide what thread to put in.
Mods, please move to appropriate thread if this isn't.

Posting a YouTube video of this person comparing V10 vs V8 vs V6 sounds.

Re: Artificial sound in F1, 2014

Adding artificial sound would be almost similar to what people achieve by loud end-cans on cars that usually get beaten by the silent ones!

While the audio is quite an entertaining one, the sounds are not captured in a consistent environment, the Ferrari seems to have been captured from the track side, the Mercedes seems to have been captured onboard with a car on track, the Honda and Renault in Lab. Even in that the Honda engine is not revved in the manner of usage. Probably something from trackside for all will give a fair idea of how they stack up. By the way, I liked the Ferrari sound most potent, though there were hints of electronic nannies at work.

Re: Artificial sound in F1, 2014

The sound is disappointing. But most disappointing are the looks. F1 isn't getting easier to drive. There is news that it will be very hard to maintain rear tyre temperature, so expect lot of slideways.

Re: Artificial sound in F1, 2014

New engines are not much quieter than V8s – FIA

Quote:
The sport’s governing body estimates the maximum volume of the new engines is around 134 decibels, down from 145 last year.

It claims the new engines are louder than the typical noise level at the front row of a rock concert (110 decibels) and above the threshold of pain (130 decibels). At close quarters the difference in volume will hardly be noticeable, it added.
