Now 4-5 tenths at Spain is no where close to what is required to pass a driver. We have all watched F1 long enough to know that.

Go to F1Matrix.it, select Spain and then Race.

That average lap time chart says it all. There was practically nothing separating Kimi and Alonso in 1st and 2nd stints.

At least towards the middle of 2nd stint, Kimi had to start conserving the tyres to last the race distance with one stop less (he had to do 7 laps extra on that set) while Alonso had no tyre conservation agenda in his race strategy from the 3rd stint onwards where he was statistically 0.8s faster than Kimi 'on the same tyres'.

Alonso just needed those Hard tyres for 16 laps and could push to the limits. Even if that set was destroyed in 13-14 laps, he would have just needed to pit a little earlier and done a couple of extra laps on the mediums for the last stint which was not going to be any issue at all. On the other hand, Kimi had to ensure that his tyres had enough life left to last the distance which would mean he had to drive on his 3rd stint in a way where that hards would last at least 25 laps to prevent the tyres getting destroyed during the last laps in case of a lock up or so.

How could he have gone faster if Kimi was ahead. Thats the whole point.

Till Lap 31 Alonso was also on a 2 stop.

Kimi went the longest on his 2nd stint (24 laps) behing only Ric (29 laps), ensuring he could push in his last stint on the hards. Lewis, Button, Grosjean (31 laps), Hulk, Mag, Maldo, Bianchi etc all went longer than him in their last stint on the Hards. So by no means did he have to conserve tires then.

He didnt even get a chance to stay in the DRS, then comes going faster than Kimi :uncontrol

Whats your source to be sure of Lap 31 number?

Did Andrea Stella or Marco mention that anywhere ;)

He was within DRS the entire 1st stint.. for 15 laps! :Frustrati:
Then realising there was no way through must have backed off not to stress the engine/tires too much in the 2nd stint, which happens once you are following a car too closely.

I meant lap 34 when he pitted. They were on the same strategy till then.

This thread won't be complete without this picture.

Montmelò, 11 May 2014

Gathered around a pit board specially prepared for the occasion, Scuderia Ferrari wanted to remember Michael Schumacher’s first win at the wheel of a Prancing Horse car, which came here at the Catalunya circuit back in 1996, when the race was run under a torrential downpour.
