Re: The 2015 F1 Season

Honda engines are getting ready to be fired up:
Quote:
McLaren will run Honda's new V6 turbo engine for the first time at a filming day at Silverstone on Friday.

Honda will join forces with McLaren in F1 next year, reuniting a partnership that won four titles in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Honda returns to the sport one year after its rivals switched from V8 engines to V6 turbos and has been eager to put some track mileage on its new power unit.

McLaren has been working on an interim car designed to house the new engine - known as the MP4-29H - and is now ready to hit the track. The Silverstone filming day will only offer limited mileage but a further opportunity to run the car will come at the post-season Abu Dhabi test in two weeks.

Will be keen to read how the results fair. The post race test at Abu Dhabi will really give us a idea on how much the Honda engines compare to Mercedes, Renault and Ferrari.

Re: The 2015 F1 Season

Exciting news for Mclaren-Honda fans. Its all with Mclaren to build a good chassis, this year's problems were not really the engine and its a shame they are not fighting with Williams, but with FI. Next year, Williams will be stronger and Lotus should be there too.

Quote:
Insiders say the new Honda engine is already close to producing a similar level of performance to the Mercedes turbo hybrid V6 which has dominated Formula 1 this season.

But the Japanese company may need to find considerably more performance ahead of the new season if it is to be competitive, as Mercedes are said to have made significant steps forward with their power unit for 2015.

Even under rules restricting development, sources say Mercedes have improved their engine enough to translate into a performance gain of about a second a lap for next season.

As well as the factory Mercedes team, the German company will supply in 2015 Williams, Force India and Lotus, who have replaced McLaren as a customer.

Re: The 2015 F1 Season

I was really hoping for Mclaren and Ferrari to finalize their 2015 driver line-up this coming weekend but it seems unlikely:

Quote:
McLaren has delayed the announcement of its 2015 driver line-up until December 1 at the earliest as it requires more time for "precise and prolonged analysis" of its options.

The team had previously said it would announce next year's line-up ahead of this weekend's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, with Fernando Alonso expected to be named alongside one of its current drivers. However, the decision over whether to keep 2009 champion Jenson Button or rookie Kevin Magnussen appears to be taking longer than expected.

"Selecting the optimal driver line-up for a Formula One team is clearly an important process, and it is therefore one that requires precise and prolonged analysis," the team said in a statement.

"That being the case, and in order to avoid distracting the race team from its primary objective during the final grand prix weekend of the season, which is to secure the best possible on-track results, we have decided to defer our final deliberations relating to our 2015 driver line-up until a date no earlier than Monday December 1."

The delay keeps the careers of both Button and Magnussen in limbo, with very few options available elsewhere on the 2015 grid.

If Button loses out he is likely to pursue a career elsewhere in motorsport and he has been linked to a move to the World Endurance Championship with one of the top LMP1 teams. Magnussen is more likely to stay focused on F1 following a promising but not perfect rookie season this year.

Re: The 2015 F1 Season

It will be fantastic to see Honda back. Remember in the unrestricted Turbo 1500 days Honda were reputed to be developing in excess of 1100 bhp. The engines were using Toluene as fuel, since the only restriction was 100 RON which Toluene allowed then to show.

There is strong rumor about Sainz Jr joining alongside Alonso in Mclaren.

Horner calls for new engines in 2016, and a nice response from Wolff, especially this bit:
Quote:
Wolff said the advanced technology of the current power units might not mean much to a drinks company like Red Bull, but is vital for a car manufacturer like Mercedes.

Time to get the launch dates posted now. Force India have revealed that their 2015 livery will be launched in Mexico late January 2015.

I admired Horner in the past, but this year I think he's been off-target with some of his comments. I truly believe that for all the vacuum cleaner noises of the 2014 engines, these engines truly have something to offer in terms of technology transfer to road cars - the split turbo, energy harvesting and brake by wire are few examples come to mind.

If we go back to tried and tested NA engines, it'll just be a case of how finely they can push tolerances and performance of those engines.

Well actually you may not be that far off. Here's a video of DC trying the 2014 Williams. He seems impressed. (Skip to the last few minutes)

So Mattiacci has been replaced by the ex "Marlboro man". Crazy. Ferrari have just lost the plot.

Re: The 2015 F1 Season

News!

We wouldn't have a #1 on the grid as Lewis is keen to use only #44 subject to approval from Mercedes. Good move I say. Everyone knows #44 is the World Champions car anyways and helps the branding too.

Ferrari' new boss from Philip Morris, Maurizio Arrivabene comes across as a very tough guy. A bit like Ron Dennis.

The new McLaren Honda which started testing at Abu Dhabi was called McLaren-Honda MP4-29H/1X1. The name indeed sounds like a fax machine.

And the following picture shows why we shouldn't speculate when drivers switch teams.
