Apart from the engine the rumored chassis design changes alone will make the 2016 F1 Ferrari radically different from its predecessor.
There is supposed to be a switch from pull rod suspension system to the more commonly used push rod system. In recent years teams have almost universally used the push rod stems which are easier to fine tune given the location of the components.

According to F1.com, the new Ferrari will also have “a shorter nose (which falls somewhere between what Mercedes and Toro Rosso used in 2015), lower sidepods with a narrower ‘coke bottle’ rear end, and a narrower gearbox”.

Ferrari, via Gorgio Piola, have released fairly detailed information on how they are to change their power unit. In fact only MGU-H remains in the same position as in 2015.

The 2016 F1 Season Thread-2016ferrari.jpg

Quote:
“Ferrari will follow Mercedes’ lead and adopt variable inlet trumpets (5) for the first time. This change, which will allow better tuning of the air/fuel mixture during combustion, is possible because the large intercooler (1, top drawing) used last year has been removed from the ‘V’ of the engine and replaced with two smaller intercooler elements (1, bottom drawing).

“Between them, these elements (one of which will be situated on top of the fuel tank and the other on the left sidepod) will ensure that the engine has the cooling needed to maximise its extra power.

To ensure that they can use a very narrow gearbox – a potential advantage aerodynamically – Ferrari have moved the MGU-K (3) and placed it low down on left side of the engine (as it is in all other manufacturers’ units). The new oil tank (4) meanwhile is both lower and wider than before, offering a potential improvement to the car’s centre of gravity, while the clutch (6) is no longer in the engine but inside the gearbox bellhousing”.

Here it is folks: The ferrari F1 challenger for 2016.
Ferrari has adopted the thumb nose for the first time, with the "ambitious" design.
The aerodynamic lines are "quite different from last year".
It is to be called Scuderia Ferrari SF16-H

Re: The 2016 F1 Season Thread

The new Red Bull livery has a matte finish. I don't remember any team in the near past having this finish. Looks cool.

Would it have any impact on aerodynamics? Wouldn't a gloss finish be more slippery through the air?

Drive on,

Apparantly, it wouldn't:

As tweeted by Craig Scarborough: "Christian Horner just confirmed to me the Matte paint has no aero impact and has been tested rigorously."

Button claims Honda have found half a second over the winter. Now the others are all running their Melbourne spec PUs, Honda will have some upgrades prior to Melbourne.

That said, at the first half of the championship, I expect Mclaren to slot in behind Merc/Ferrari/Red Bull/Williams.

Re: The 2016 F1 Season Thread

What is the grid like contraption clamped on either side of Vettel's Ferrari? Is it some kind of device that takes aerodynamic measurements?

Re: The 2016 F1 Season Thread

Testing times on the first day of winter testing:
1. S. Vettel Ferrari 01:24.939 69
2. L. Hamilton Mercedes Grand Prix 01:25.409 156
3. D. Ricciardo Red Bull Racing 01:26.044 87
4. V. Bottas Williams 01:26.091 80
5. A. Celis Jr. Force India F1 01:26.298 58
6. J. Button McLaren 01:26.735 84
7. C. Sainz Jr. Scuderia Toro Rosso 01:27.180 55
8. M. Ericsson Sauber 01:27.555 88
9. P. Wehrlein Manor Racing 01:28.292 54
10. R. Grosjean Haas F1 01:28.399 31
11. J. Palmer Renault 01:29.356 37

Mercedes ran a massive 156 laps reporting no problems whatsoever. That is quite impressive. Newcomers Haas had a minor issue with a front wing failure and were quick to react by bringing a stronger wing for today's test.

Sebastien Vettel reporting that the car is a good improvement over last years.

Good news for Mclaren fans, Button feels the car has improved and the ERS seems to be working fine.

Sad news for Red Bull fans with Daniel Ricciardo reporting that the Renault engine feels just like last year.

Still early days though!

That's the aero testing rake.
Fitted with sensors to measure the effect of the aero bits on the car.
You can see the sensors etc. here on the McLaren.

Re: The 2016 F1 Season Thread

Looks like we are going to get a dramatic qualifying session.

All F1 bosses agreed to the new elimination style of qualifying. The rule change idea still needs approval by World Motor Sport Council next month, but it is understood that the plan is to have it come in as early as this year.

How it works

Saturdays are going to be fun now.

So we might miss the action like the dash to get into top-15, top-10 during Q1 and Q2 respectively in the last minutes of qualifying. Its always fun to watch drivers outside top-15 qualifying in the last lap.

Anyway this new rule if agreed, will ensure that the drivers are not the last one to get eliminated. Drivers have to keep pushing all the time. Must be a different kind of experience especially for the spectators as well as drivers. I am sure the radio communication between drivers and pitlane people will go berserk when this happens.

I wonder how the - "Slowest driver eliminated every 1 minute 30 seconds thereafter until the chequered flag;" is going to work at Belgium's Spa-Francorchamps circuit where the lap record is 1:47.

Does it mean that if the driver Begins the lap before the "1 minute 30 seconds" the lap counts? Even then he wont make the next round of "1 minute 30 seconds".
