Re: Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017

Not very encouraging signs from McLaren Honda for the Australian GP..

https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/h...ian-gp-885008/

As a fan, I really had high hopes from MH to stage a turnaround from it's lack of form from previous 2 seasons, and watch Alonso kick some A.S.S. in this machinery. Alas, won't happen in this lifetime.

Though it is good to see Ferrari showing positive signs, should be an interesting battle between them & Meredes, if all the hype surrounding Ferrari's potential are true.

Cannot wait for tomorrow morning 6.30 AM!!

Re: Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017

If you look at the leader-board for 2017 Aus GP FP1, you would think it was 2016 still.
No major shakeups there.
Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017-timings-fp1.jpg

Mercedes looks the most refined with the aero bits.

The T-tray has added one more level.

Force India looks refreshing, to say in simple words.

Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017-c7pzmazvaaexr_f.jpg

Aero testing/ validation took up most of the time.

RedBull has started adding Aero bits on to the car as expected.

The rear tyre of RBR was getting jammed when the car was on jacks due to the floor flexing.
So low are the clearances.

See the ballast weight added on the front end to enable better balance.
6 kg apparently for Renault in this case.

Re: Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017

Seems as though Mercedes still have the edge over one lap. I didn't see the session on TV and was following it online so not sure how quick Ferrari are with a tank full of fuel in comparison to Mercedes. Red bull should be quick over a single lap as they have shown last year but seems to be in 3rd place over a race simulation behind Mercedes and Ferrari.

Lewis Hamilton faster by 0.547s and also looking in promising shape on long-run pace.
I won’t read too much into the times today. In FP3 tomorrow, the quali simulations should be revealing the true single lap pace.
Around 0.7 seconds separating the compounds per lap so far. Up from 0.3 seconds we saw at the Barcelona test.

Fernando's 12th place does prove that experience counts in operating these cars. Really hope Honda can sort out their problems in the coming races. The man deserves a race winning car!

Alonso qualified 12th, 2.3 seconds off Hamiltons pole at last years Australian Grand Prix. So far looks like they are about where they were 12 months ago, relatively speaking in terms of pace.

Two weeks is a really short time in engineering and looks like Honda was burning the midnight oil in Sakura for the last two weeks. Honda is still more than 1 year behind in terms of technology (TJI). Their research, test and development is just playing catch-up during this era of PUs. There is clearly an organisation problem and a technology problem. Honda doesn't have the high level of expertise that Mercedes has right now in TJI. Renault didn't, and they went after the right people from the industry but Honda is doing it their own way which is harder and is taking a longer time. Obviously fans are upset that their team is falling behind.

For McLaren so far no breakdowns. But nothing to write home about either. However, considering that the ICE tech. is fairly new for Honda, it will not be unreasonable to expect progress in their position as season moves on.

Looks like the rear downforce is trimmed on McLaren to compensate for lower power but when they finally improve the power output, they will be able to increase the rear downforce and get a better balance.

Re: Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017

I really like the new sector time bar, now we have 200m sector times as well. A neat addition.

Each bar is colour coded as well
  1. Grey - No improvement.
  2. Green - Personal best.
  3. Purple - Fastest of the session.

So, the Ferrari is not slow. But we don't know if it is really the fastest as of now.

The Mercedes were starting to light up the track when Lance took another stroll in his Williams, hit the wall around turn 10, brought a red flag and ruined it for all.

But we just have to wait for a couple of hours to find out.

Hopefully the race pace will also be close like quali.
Hamilton seems to be on the game this year too.
In all probabilities, the track records stand to be broken this year.
Cars are fast. Will have to see tomorrow how they behave close behind others.
Some drivers are already complaining that they are unable to follow closely each other.
Force India not living upto the hype, while Haas seems to be doing well.
The way the team mates are spread across the grid, it seems like the new cars are enabling the well prepared drivers to show their skills better.

Ferraris have improved, but clearly it's his championship to lose. Unless Ferrari can do something about it, he is walking this home - and i hope i am wrong on this.

Vettel did well to qualify ahead of Bottas, but Kimi was way behind. Kimi needs to bring his A-game tomorrow so we can have a good race.

And finally, here's hoping that Ferrari have learnt something from last year and can put together some decent race strategies consistently.

Re: Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017

Why is the thread named Silly Season ??

Its been a fantastic build up to this weekend.
The Silver Arrow's are fast , Ferrari's are no slouch either.

Vettel vs Hamilton.

Lets hope it remains the same throughout the season. Wish Kimi being a bit closer

He threw lot of victory last year due to poor starts. Hope Merc has found a solution because Ferrari's are traditionally pretty good at starts. More over this year the engineer can not modify the mapping for the clutch lever, it has to be a linear one.

I was so happy to see Vettel split the Mercs tbh, hope it is a three way title fight with Redbull joining later.

Can't believe McLaren-Honda will be going through another season struggling to get into the top 10. The top 5 seems another world away. Winning seems ridiculously far away.

The gap to Mercedes/Ferrari must be atleast 180 Hp. Don't see this being made up till mid 2018 as a best case scenario.

The gap by then will widen with gains made by both manufacturers.
