Some sort of Orange/ Red elements are sure to be there in the livery.
And it's expected to be a departure from the last year's theme.
A group of McLaren super-fans were invited for a tour of MTC and chat with the team recently. According to someone who was there in that group, they saw Stoffel getting photographed with the new team kit on and the team wear appeared to have some orange. Apparently the new caps for next year has light grey - with red. So it is reasonable to expect some colour on the MP4-32. Orange reminds them of their CanAm championship winning cars (1967-71), papaya orange to be precise.

About being competitive in 2017 season,
According to the fans who've been to MTC, nobody at McLaren had anything but praise for Honda - they think good progress has been made over the winter by Honda and they also acknowledged they had room for improvement on the chassis side.
They sounded reasonably confident but they are worried by Newey as always. But absolute 100% conviction from the team that they will be back at the top. I guess if you are as competitive as a racing team are, 100% conviction is a must. Otherwise no point in going racing.

Honda chief Yusuke Hasegawa is being modest as ever.
He admitted the manufacturer still needs to gain much more to catch its rivals, but when asked if that gap could be bridged this winter, he told Autosport "I believe so".

Quote:
"From an engine power point of view, we have some target numbers, which are estimated from Mercedes and Ferrari.

"Our target is to catch them up in 2017, reach the same level as now, but it's difficult to know how much they will gain."

When asked if Honda was also working on improving its qualifying engine modes - an area Mercedes has excelled in during the last three years, Hasegawa said: "Maybe. Once we can get very good engine performance, the next concern is reliability.

"Currently, we have to limit sometimes the best performance in qualifying.

"Until we get the best performance, which is what Mercedes is doing, I don't know how much limitation we will have."

One of the major limitations of the modern Formula1 days is the extreme numbers of regulations trying to limit innovations and latest tech. for budget's sake.
For eg. it's not surprising that McLaren is already involved in manufacturing techniques involving Graphene. They introduced carbon fiber in Formula1 after all. However, Graphene might see application on a McLaren road car before a McLaren Formula1 racer due to the abovesaid restrictions.

Here is Jonathan Neale's interview at McLaren around their launch of the new watch from luxury Swiss watch brand, Richard Mille.

RM 50-03 Tourbillon Split Seconds Chronograph Ultralight McLaren F1.

Quote:
So, Jonathan, what is graphene?

“There’s a lot of confusion in the marketplace about graphene, particularly in materials science, where it’s being touted as the next big step. When people talk about graphene, they’re not talking about a bulk material – you don’t get blocks or rolls of graphene – it exists at an atomic level, but can used to strengthen, toughen, and lighten carbon-fibre composites.

“Technically speaking, graphene is a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a 2D hexagonal lattice, but for practical purposes, it comes in all sorts of forms, each having various advantages and disadvantages, depending on the application. And the process through which graphene is used to enhance resin systems is called nanoplatelet reinforcement.”

Can you simply explain nanoplatelet reinforcement?

“Yes, graphene is infused or mixed into resin systems, and those resin systems, for the application of creating carbon-fibre composites, are then combined and cured with layers of carbon-fibre. A graphene nanoplatelet is a small flat shape – very small, microscopically small, in fact. When you put those platelets into a resin system and mix it with your normal carbon-fibre layers, you greatly increase the inter-laminar bond strength, amongst other mechanical properties. Previously, when you relied on regular resins to hold the carbon-fibre layers together, there’s the possibility that those plies could shear apart – a common and well-known Achilles’ heel of composites. By introducing other structures within the resin, you can increase the shear toughness.”

How much of a step forward is graphene technology?

“We think the properties of graphene are pretty mind-blowing. Some of the mechanical properties of graphene-enhanced composites can be improved by double-digit percentages compared to regular carbon-fibre composites. In engineering, we often talk about improvements in terms of fractions of a per cent; to suddenly introduce improvements of this order is incredible, but it gives you a very clear perspective on just how much we’re discovering about the properties of graphene, and just how much it’s re-defining our existing understanding of materials science.

How has McLaren been collaborating with Richard Mille?

“McLaren’s work with Richard Mille has focused on two specific areas of the watch: the first is the casing, which is made of a very thin-ply carbon-fibre. It’s such an intricate and delicate structure – but incredibly strong and light because of the graphene infusion. In fact, our design lab at McLaren Applied Technologies works with the National Graphene Institute, based at the University of Manchester, and has helped blend a particular type of graphene into the case structure. The thin plies of carbon create some beautiful textures and contours, because everything has been slimmed down to a high degree.

“The second area of development was in the polyurethane strap, which is obviously still soft and pliable, but has also been strengthened by enhancing the resin system with a different graphene infusion.”

Are there natural similarities between horology and Formula 1 construction?

“There are clear parallels in terms of R&D, material science, and high-end manufacturing, of course. But perhaps the most interesting crossover is the fact that both industries need to consider and accommodate the role of the human being – either the watch’s wearer, or a grand prix driver – when designing and working with high-end materials.”

“So while the watch itself is incredibly strong and light, you’re creating something that’s a blend of both engineering and artistry; you’re not necessarily looking for the most absolute qualities, you’re looking to match those with the requirements of the wearer.”

“In Formula 1, our carbon-fibre construction techniques mean we could significantly increase the stiffness and strength of the monocoque, but that would substantially increase the loadings on the driver, which we want to avoid. And that’s why every Formula 1 car is mandated to incorporate deformable crash-proof structures around the car; they’re designed to progressively deform to best protect the driver.

“So you can see that, in both our worlds, you’re not chasing the most absolute of values, but creating something that blends the requirements of man and machine – and that’s actually a far tougher objective to meet.”

Re: Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017

As a McLaren fan I hope they come up with a good car this year. Waited way too long for them to get competitive again.
With Ron gone, things will change for sure. Any change is good, considering they are a shadow of their former self now.
Go Macaaaaaaaaaa!

The fortunes of McLaren in 2017 will depend mainly on two factors.
The progress of Honda PU in terms of combustion technology vs Merc. & others, and how Peter Prodromou fares against his mentor Adrian Newey in finding performance in the new Aero regulations.

However, the main missing puzzle for 2017 grid is the fate of Manor team.
Apparently offers were made for a complete buyout of the team and its facilities. Some say Ron Dennis could be behind one of the proposals. In any case, I hope we haven't seen the last of "Big Ron".

Re: Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017

Liberty media might be reconsidering the $100 Million annual payment to Ferrari. This is a huge step! A financial shakeup could mean that teams get significant payment for their performance. Manor missed out on $10 Million prize amount, if it was to receive a bit more for 10th place finish it would help in its investment and could result in better car next season.

There's lots of action happening in the boardrooms this winter.
Liberty Media Group has decided to get rid of all of the existing independent directors on the board of F1's parent company, with the exception of its former chairman.
Bernie Ecclestone has been apparently offered the position of honorary president and might not have day-to-day control of F1, if all goes according to plan.
Sean Bratches, a former ESPN executive and Ross Brawn are supposed to have offers to look after the commercial and sporting sides of F1.
Liberty Media Group also wants to bring in F1's teams as shareholders in the sport.
Changes are happening everywhere.

Haha Big Ron.
It would be interesting to see a McLaren B team on the grid. I remember the days Ferrari used to run Sauber as a B team, and the kind of data they used to get on the tyres. Helped them have their own private tyre supplier in Bridgestone and the rest is history.
I don't advocate that policy, but it seems everyone is doing it now a days in F1. The pilots are allowed to compete against each other on the track, but at the factories the engineers are busy collaborating the data between themselves. Keeps both the cars and the pilots competitive.

Cant wait to see the new livery.

Re: Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017

Farewell Bernie...
You are a legend. But like everything in life, change is inevitable.
Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017-c24ryyfwgam_nzd.jpg

Here's a brief history of Bernie.

After the 2nd world war, Ecclestone started driving Formula 3 but decided to concentrate on his business ventures and stopped racing.
He returned to racing in 1957. He gradually shifted from driving to managing Lewis Evans.
Later he returned managing, and co-owning a Formula 2 team Jochen Rindt.
After Rindt died Eccelstone continued by buying the Brabham team in 1972.
In 1973 Eccelstone hired the legendary Gordon Murray, and started raking in wins over the 1974 and 1975 season.
In the beginning of the 80s, Ecclestone had signed a young Nelson Piquet as driver, and BMW as the supplier of engines. Piquet won the 1981 and 1983 championship.
In parallel to his activities as team-owner, Ecclestone has been involved as a Formula 1 executive since 1978, negotiating television rights
In 1988 Ecclestone sold Brabham.
Ecclestone continued to negotiate deals on television rights, which brought him in regular conflict with FIA.
He continued handling affairs for the team-owners which brought him to hammering out the significant 1997 Concorde Agreement.
Since 1999 Ecclestone started selling of shares in the company SLEC Holdings, but remaining in full control.
In 2004 the other owners united as Speed Investments wanted more control, and started a series of legal battles.
In the meanwhile Ecclestone made a coup and got the teams behind him to sign a new Concorde Agreement.
Speed Investments quickly backed away from further battles, and bought the remaining 25% from Eccelstone, forming a new company CVC. Ecclestone bought himself a share into the new company.
In 2012 former Bayerisch Landesbank chief Gerhard Gribowsky was charged with tax evasion, and Gribowski accused Ecclestone to have paid 44M USD in bribes.
After some dilly dallying, Ecclestone agreed to pay a 60M USD fine, to make the case go away in 2014.
And now the Goodbyes....

Re: Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017

Ross Brawn will return to the sport in a newly-created role of Managing Director, Motor Sports, as part of Liberty Media’s takeover.

They have found the right man for the job. Great news!

source

Edit:

The latest Time magazine had a feature on Lewis and F1 in general and they also touched upon the acquisition of the sport by Liberty Media. It was written for the American market, sort of warming them to the F1 brigade. The new owners have big plans for F1 and they want each race to be marketed like the Super Bowl. Not sure whether this means we will have more advertising breaks than overtakes.

But we can be certain that the sport is going to see a drastic change in the coming years. Hopefully they won't dilute the sport and drive away the older fans.

Re: Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017

First Ross Brawn says this Source

Quote:
“There are different levels of fans, of course and we want to appeal to all of them. We have to start with the guy at the circuit who won’t have access to a laptop. He wants to watch a race and he wants to understand what’s going on. So we have to define what is needed there. And then we need to start to add the layers for the fans who want to look into F1 more deeply.

“And I think there is so much material there; stuff that goes on in the garages, on the pit wall, deeper analysis of what is going on at the circuit. People will be able to dial in at whatever level They want to.”

And then this

Formula One has been ineffective and dysfunctional, says Chase Carey

I am so excited with what F1 is going to turn into! It was so frustrating that very little information actually comes from F1 itself to engage the fans. Things are looking up.

Re: Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017

Racecar-Engineering has published an Aero study conducted by Dynamic Flow Solutions in their Jan 2017 issue.

Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017-aero-interactions.jpg

The study deals primarily with the changes in the Aero performance of their model car (DF's interpretations of the 2017 rules) when following each other, in an attempt to overtake.
Remember, the FIA’s brief to the 2017 rule writers was to not make ‘the overtaking problem’ any worse.

The key points from the paper based on their model are:
  • Floor is responsible for much more of the downforce, which by itself makes following another car easier
  • Beyond 4 car lengths both balance and downforce loss is minimal.
  • Aero balance will shift forward significantly when following less than 1 car length creating aero oversteer, whereas the last 6 years the downforce loss has mainly been in the front leading to understeer.
  • They remain optimistic that what looks to be at least a partial fix for the aerodynamic reasons for the difficulty in following closely, combined with an increase in mechanical grip, will improve the situation overall.

Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017-aero-interactions-following.jpg

It looks as though the initial response when closing in will be to allow the cars to get closer more easily and then the flow separations affect causing oversteer. However, it must be noted that they don't take into account the loss of drag a chasing car will get as a result of the larger foot print the new wider cars will create as they punch through the air or the delay in separation from clever cooling ducts, or the effect of the possible engine cover sail on helping to re-attach air flow to the rear wing. The study also excludes artificially assisted passing aids like DRS, or ‘push to pass’ engine modes, or the release of stored energy.

Overall, there is reason for hope that 2017 could see closer racing if the PUs are evenly matched.

Re: Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017

If the teams are a bit closer in performance this season, then we are in for a treat. Better tyres with less degradation, more grip and stability from the cars means drivers are going to push these machines to the limit. Something they weren't able to do for some seasons now. Some corners are going to become straights! So, we may see the cars a lot closer.

Maybe the races will become more processional, if the difference in performance between the teams is huge, with the leaders running away. So, this can swing either way.

Fingers crossed!

Anyone interested in designing Lewis's helmet?

Please go to : https://www.mercedesamgf1.com/en/mer...ns-new-helmet/

The winning designer, handpicked by Lewis, will also have the chance to collect a signed replica helmet from the man himself!

As expected, internet has thrown quite a few funny ones already.

I am sorry if this is off-topic but has anyone noticed that most of the european races will be telecast at 6:30 in the evening instead of 5:30? Please visit www.formula1.com to confirm the same. Does anyone know why this change was put in?
