It was a very personal decision. He lost his wife last year and he wanted to be with his children back in the UK. I guess he would have stayed, if Ferrari had a base in UK like most other teams. Rather unfortunate!

By the way, the new Renault is here - RS17

Re: Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017

For me the difference between 2016 Vs 2017 cars weren't as big as I expected it to be. Maybe if I see them on the track it will be different. I like the difference in the style of air intake inlets on Sauber Vs Renault, 2016 Vs 2017 engine.

I think everyone is holding their cards, we will see the actual pecking order after few races only.

I think top speed records will be broken with these cars, lets see. Will we see a new layout for Monza this year? If yes, it will be a delight to watch these car attack the track from onboard videos.

The 2017 cars are expected to have more downforce and mechanical grip.
This will definitely translate to higher corner speeds, but maybe not the top speed, even though the higher exit speeds might seem like they are going to be ultimately faster. But the higher drag that comes with the downforce will show its effect. But will the rise in power expected from the PUs be enough to overcome that?
Lots of people expect them to break track records, which means higher average speeds for sure.

The argument whether there will be more overtakes or not can only be resolved when these cars run on track in anger.

Lots of factors for and against the ease of overtaking.
  • Higher aero dependency - against.
  • More downforce from diffuser - for.
  • Higher mechanical grip - for.
  • Lesser tyre-wear management - for.
  • Longer time on the straights - for.
  • Higher power requirement - against.
  • Higher fuel allocation - for.
  • Wider bodywork - against.

How they work together is what we are going to learn in Melbourne.
F1 regulation overhauls have always been a lottery. Let's see who wins this time

Yes I did read about this deetjohn but I think there is a bit more to it than a personal problem. Allison was talking about total retirement around the time he left Ferrari and to return this quick?!

In my opinion, I think Ferrari's new corporate structure had a big role in his exit. Wish they at least made an attempt to get Paddy Lowe. Seems that without a technical guru its hard to win a championship these days. How about Pat Symonds Marchionne?!

EDIT: Love the Renault livery!

Re: Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017

Even as Force India was preparing for their 2 PM GMT car unveil hinting at stealing the thunder off McLaren with their possible orange highlights on the car, Mercedes grabbed the headlines from them by revealing six images of their 2017 car.
Talk about playing spoilsport

Here are a couple of pictures from the Sauber filming day.

Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017-91ebe1b5689e9370f48d5d4800e67920.jpg

Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017-de857c2a03f9f269e90d30521cfa28e2.jpg

maybe not so good looking from the sides, but from the front & rear the cars look good in my opinion.
In any case, the major design gurus are yet to show their creations.

Sahara Force India showcased their car.

Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017-sfi-team.jpg

Not the prettiest one so far, in my opinion.
But Mr. Mallya was as confident as ever about their prospects for 2017.

Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017-sfi-fin.jpg
The shark fin for VJM10 was looking the biggest and the most empty one so far. Colour choice also seemed wrong for me.

Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017-sfi-nose.jpg
The nostrils were carried over,, but seemed bigger.
The paint scheme masks the bottom part of the nostrils.
Maybe the whole thing could have been silver to avoid the "M" style.

Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017-sfi-side.jpg
Desperately attracts attention towards the blank shaft fin.

Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017-sfi-step.jpg
The sharp step on the front part seems to be hiding the "active" part of the suspension. Probably under development in case the FIA deems it legal.

Anyone interested in designing Lewis's helmet?

Please go to : https://www.mercedesamgf1.com/en/mer...ns-new-helmet/

The winning designer, handpicked by Lewis, will also have the chance to collect a signed replica helmet from the man himself!

As expected, internet has thrown quite a few funny ones already.
Hamilton has announced the winning design for his 2017 helmet.

T wing, maybe.

Aldo Costa has confirmed they do have shark fin under wraps and will be testing them out next week via Live tech brief they had.

Other teams are also rumored to have exploited that "gap" in the aero regulations.

Waiting for McLaren launch to see what they have got.

Meanwhile, Max Verstappen has filled a request with the Formula One Management in order to get abbreviation ‘VER’ instead of ‘VES’ on records.
‘VER’ was being used for Jean Eric Vergne till last year.
FOM have not responded to the request yet.

Hopefully we will not have a "BUT" "GRO" "PER" situation anymore.

Here are some of the details from the Renault car, which I though looked good.

Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017-renaultrs17f1side.jpg

I like a few edges more than all rounded off stuff.

Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017-renaultrs17f1nose.jpg
The nose is slightly wider and is slightly more prominent than last year.

Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017-renaultrs17f1front-wing.jpg
The front wing is still relatively conservative and will certainly be upgraded for Melbourne.

Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017-renaultrs17s-duct-exit.jpg
Aft of the front axle, the S-duct exit is visible through which air is directed to the upper side of the chassis.

Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017-renaultrs17f1s-duct-inlet.jpg
The inlet for the S-duct can be seen on the underside at the front axle and pushrod suspension.

Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017-renaultrs17f12017-birds-eye-view.jpg
From the bird's eye view, the true size (length & width) becomes apparent. The chassis is very narrow in the rear. The maximum width allowed is not used.

Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017-renaultrs17f1rear-tyre.jpg
The tail wing is broader and shallower. Together with the huge diffuser, significantly more downforce is generated in the rear.

Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017-renaultrs17f1front-wing-attachment.jpg
The attachment of the front wing is extended backwards by quiet a bit.

Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017-renaultrs17f1shark-fin.jpg
Looks like shark fin is the popular solution for steadying the air to the rear wing .

Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017-renaultrs17f12017-side-deflectors.jpg
The deflectors slotted downwards.

Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017-renaultrs17f12017bargeboards.jpg
Barge boards almost rectangular.

Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017-renaultrs17f1airbox.jpg
The airbox above the cockpit is divided in several channels. The one in the middle is directed to the engine, and on the sides to various coolers.

To me, I've never understood the purpose of car/driver numbers. I wish they'd do away with numbering, and replace it with the driver's 3-letter abbreviation - on the car' nose, side and helmet. I know the front running drivers' numbers, but struggle with the midfield/tail. Using the letters will help a casual fan better identify cars, and do away with numbers that seem pointless.

Running a development driver in FP1 might be the only time this causes confusion, but its no better today with car numbers.

I love the Renault's colour scheme, particularly the appearance of the matte yellow. Given it is yellow, I should be forgiven for saying it looks utterly butterly delicious!

The biggest disappointment in colour schemes and design is that of Force India - from quite a handsome 2016 car, I just cannot stomach the appearance of their 2017 car.

Ferrari has revealed their 2017 car.
I must say that I like what they have done with the new rules.
Shark fin, T-tray, monkey seat - you name it. It's all there.
Look at those side pods

McLaren unveiled their 2017 car at MTC.

The setting matched the sense of the occasion.
Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017-c5bowh0xeaeawnn.jpg

However, the livery was a letdown considering the hype they created.
Hopefully the car will be competitive and that's all that matters.
There are quite a few aero bits which are interesting to look at.
Wonder why they covered the diffuser during launch?
