Re: Formula 1 - The 2018 Season

Here's the selection for Australian GP, with ultrasofts as the softest option available. It will be interesting to see how it goes.

Shared one on the MotoGP thread, now here is my pocket calendar for F1 2018.
Split it into three as the whole calendar becomes very pixellated after compression.

F1 launches 'Engineered Insanity' global marketing campaign.

It's taken almost seven decades but Formula One has finally launched its first ever global marketing campaign since the sport's inception in 1950.

Third DRS zone has been added to Albert Park. The new zone will be between turn 12 and turn 13.

Re: Formula 1 - The 2018 Season

A very detailed article by Andrew Benson. Asks all the tough questions.

McLaren: 'Red Bull did a better job than us' - has $100m gamble paid off?
http://www.bbc.com/sport/formula1/43562369

McLaren looking at a tough future. Renault are getting better with significant investment. Without Honda's millions to spend getting close to the big guns is a mighty task in the long term.

They need the road car division to start pumping in more resources and hope Liberty bring in a more even share of the earnings pie.

Re: Formula 1 - The 2018 Season

When I think about it, it seems that the engine is disproportionately impacting race results more than anything else. It's also a major factor at driving up engine costs and ensuring that only teams that manufacture their own engines win championships.

A lot of this has to do with the clampdown on other areas like aerodynamics. I think there should be at least a couple of areas that teams can innovate in to the extent that if a team is down in one area but stellar in another they can challenge the front runners.

Look at the situation now - obviously Red Bull and McLaren are not going to have the advantage that Renault has.

It would have the benefit of lowering costs as well as Brawn GP proved being competitive by their double diffuser interpretation of the rules.

Drive on,
Shibu.

Re: Formula 1 - The 2018 Season

McLaren's Eric Boullier has gone on record saying that the actual McLaren 2018 car wont appear till the Spanish GP on 13th May. The team are behind on development and are running an evolution of the Honda designed chassis.

This means they lost 1.5 months of development due to the change, which is huge. It does explain the poor pre season reliability and the lack of pace compared to Red Bull.

I hope its a big boost in performance once it hits the track. The team has been fortunate to score points they did and be 4th in the Constructors.

It's really interesting to see how this will pan out. Back in the 2000's teams did sometimes introduce the new car a few races into the season. The thing is you could go testing the weeks before its first race to sort out any issues, and go testing following the GP if those issues still exist.

McLaren don't have anywhere near that luxury. So I'm a bit dubious of how much different this car really is. I reckon it's more like a large update package.

Its a massive statement to say the actual 2018 car is yet to hit the track. McLaren are feeling the pinch after forgoing Honda's millions. In earlier years they would not have lost so much time in development. The gap to the top 3 is huge and they are well down on the speed trap order, with no answer as to why. A lot rides on the new car.
