Earlier this month, auction house RM Sotheby's auctioned the Formula 1 Ferrari driven by Michael Schumacher in his 2001 Monaco GP. The car was sold at the contemporary evening auction held in New York for a sum of US$ 7,504,000.

The Ferrari F2001, bearing chassis number 211, propelled Michael Schumacher to victory in the Monaco GP and the Hungarian GP. He won the driver's championship at the later race as well, with four races remaining in the season. It was the only time he won both the Monaco GP as well as the driver's championship for Ferrari. This was also Ferrari's last victory at the circuit, till Sebastian Vettel's win in 2017. The same car was used for warm-up and qualifying stints at Barcelona, Montreal, the Nurburgring, Magny-Cours, Spa-Francorchamps and Monza.

The F2001 weighed 600 kg and was powered by a 3,000cc, naturally aspirated, 90-degree V10 engine that developed 805-898 BHP @ 18,500 rpm. This power was transferred to the rear wheels through a 7-speed semi-automatic sequential gearbox.

The car was estimated to fetch between US$ 4 million and US$ 5.5 million by RM Sotheby's. However, it ended up selling for US$ 2 million more.

It's nice to see the legends car was auctioned for a hefty price!

PS:
Well this thread also puts me into a state of nostalgia following Schumi's race very closely in my schooling days! One hell of a driver he was but sad his health state is said to be questioned ever since he met with an accident in Dec 2013. His family has never spoken about his condition publicly anywhere till date apart from few instances with bleak statements causing confusions in the minds of his avid followers like me. I only got to know what Ferrari as a brand was, when he was in the drivers seat in F1. I hope he recovers soon. Sad to realize the best driver met with an accident while Skiing alongside his son :(

The F2001. What a machine that was.

Wrapped up both titles with races to spare in 2001. And it was so superior that Ferrari used the same car for the 2002 season start as well. And it claimed poles and won again against the new cars that season!

So, the winning bid looks like a steal when you look at the going rate for footballers these days.

And the F2001 isn\'t complete without the man himself, that ubiquitous logo and the glorious V10.

This car with the droopy nose is the one that started the era of Ferrari domination. Even in 2000, Ferrari's pace was (finally) on par with McLaren-Mercedes, but from 2001 onward, it was just years of absolute domination. I remember thinking then "we are witnessing greatness that will perhaps not be repeated again".

Keep fighting, Michael :thumbs up.
