Formula E reveals 2nd-generation race car

Formula E reveals 2nd-generation race car-gen2.jpg

French automaker Spark has released the CGI renderings today, while we have to wait until the Geneva Motor Show in early March to see the real car and technical specs.
Some speculations on the possible specs are:
  • The new battery, built by McLaren, will allow for a full power output of 250kW.
  • Thats around 335 horsepower.
  • Double the durability compared to the current model.

Currently Audi, Jaguar, and BMW competes for the title, with the possibility of Benz and Porsche to join in.

Re: Formula E reveals 2nd-generation race car

The rendering of the new car looks great. The halo is the only ugly bit. Can't wait to see the production version in a couple of months. That said, I'd like to see the power output go up in times to come.

While some people might have been skeptical about the Formula E series at the start, I firmly believed that it was here to stay. More and more manufacturers will join the bandwagon in coming years. Mahindra Racing doing well in recent times will only help in the popularity of the sport to grow in India.

Re: Formula E reveals 2nd-generation race car

While the renderings look good. Does anyone find similarities with this car?

The most important change that this car brings is the near doubling of the battery capacity. From the 28kWh (developed by Williams Advanced Engineering) which has been in use, the new 54kWh batteries developed by McLaren Applied Technologies will nearly double the range.
This will eliminate the need of the car swaps which used to be part of the Formula E races.

One concern noted in few articles/forums was the new one piece front bodywork section. With the contact sport that Formula E is currently, the change of bodywork might be more extensive in case of contact. Some practical changes would surely come to this design by then.

Lets wait and see how the actual car might end up looking.

Ever since the halo mandate was made, its been a designer's nightmare to get it integrated with rest of the machine. There are rumors that they will light it up with LEDs'. No idea on how that would turn out.

Here is the 360 degree video from ABB site:

Re: Formula E reveals 2nd-generation race car

How come we don't have a Formula E thread. The races are not as dull as they sound. It's pretty hard to drive on circuits like Hong Kong. Moreover Mahindra is doing pretty well there. For first time I saw Indian flag for the top spot in a Motorsport event.

Nico Rosberg joins Formula E as an investor, and will also drive the Gen 2 car in Berlin.

over a year on from his shock retirement, former F1 world champion Nico Rosberg is using his considerable knowledge of motorsport by dipping his toes into a new business venture -- he's joining the all-electric racing series Fomula E as an investor and shareholder.

Rosberg is to get behind the wheel of the striking new Gen2 model ahead of May's Berlin E-Prix, giving fans a first public demonstration of the car described as "the future of racing."

The New Formula E Cars Are Already Way Faster Than Last Season. It’s safe to say that the new Gen 2 chassis, with a less restricted and more powerful EV power unit, and enough battery to run a full 45-minute race session will provide a better Formula E experience for fan and driver alike.

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled what it calls a ‘teaser version’ of the racing car it will compete with for the 2019-20 Formula E season, ahead of its public debut at Geneva motor show.

The EQ Silver Arrow 01 concept car will be on display at Geneva, sporting a special teaser livery that hints at the Mercedes-Benz EQ Formula E Team’s official livery. However, the definitive design will only be revealed at a later stage, closer to the sixth season of the series that kicks-off in late 2019.

"The countdown to our entry into Formula E has now officially begun," said Head of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport Toto Wolff. "Our team has obviously been working behind the scenes on this project for quite a while now, but when you see the car in our teaser livery for the first time, you know that the project has entered a serious phase."

Formula E for anyone?

Although petrolheads will pass the opportunity to watch a race, but this season has already produced some exciting races. Four different races in the opening 4 races. Mahindra is top constructor as of now, with Ambrosio leading the drivers.
If not races, atleast have look at the highlights. Not that boring I say!
