Liberty Media - the owner of Formula One, has revealed its proposed plans for the future of the sport. At a meeting conducted at the Bahrain International Circuit, Chase Carey - Chairman and CEO of Formula 1, spoke about the future with teams and the FIA.

Liberty Media has proposed changes pertaining to the engines, overall costs, revenues, rules as well as governance. As per the new proposal, the power unit should be cheaper to make, sound louder and be powerful enough, while also being less complicated in order to reduce the chances of grid penalties. It should also borrow technology from road going cars like hybrid systems and allow manufacturers to design and build unique power units. Additionally, these rules must also consider new teams as well as customer teams who buy the engines from a manufacturer.

In the future, some amount of standardisation of the car will be inevitable due to the proposed cap on the team expenditure. Even so, the teams must have a unique car with different engine, aerodynamic and suspension characteristics. On the technical regulation front, the new rules would increase overtaking opportunities. While technological advances in the car will happen, driver skill should be the main factor in the overall car performance.

The biggest change would be to the revenue model. Currently, the prize money is distributed on the basis of overall manufacturer standings. Ferrari is paid an additional amount every season, not tied to their performance, due to the fact that it is one of the oldest teams that has participated in all the Formula One seasons. The new rules would consider revenue only based on performance to reward the teams based on their success only. It will also offer revenue to the engine suppliers as well.

Apart from all these, there would be a streamlining of the governing structure between the owners, teams and the FIA.

Liberty Media has probably set a deadline for finalising 2021 engine regulations, and it's May. While it started in October last year, delay in decision making will make it hard for new players to make a decision.

Formula 1 will drop tyre warmers and move to low-profile 18-inch wheels for 2021, having opened the tender process for the next tyre supply contract.

Front tyres will also be narrower, dropping by 35mm to 270mm. The rears will stay the same, at 405mm, while diameters will increased from the current 670m to "700-720mm."

The next single-supplier contract will cover the four seasons from 2020-23, the first of which will be run with current tyre sizes and blankets.

There will be three compounds at each race, as expected with the simplified hard, medium and soft names. The FIA characterises the tyres as follows:

- Hard compound: 2s degradation achieved at 22% race distance Base lap time

- Medium compound: 2s degradation achieved at 18% race distance 1.2s/lap quicker than Hard compound

- Soft compound: 2s degradation achieved at 10% race distance 2.2s/lap quicker than Hard compound

It looks like 2021 engine rules will be delayed. The bosses are looking for new engine entries like Aston Martin, Cosworth, Porsche. In effect, 2 years is not enough to lure in new prospects, hence the delay.

But impractical. Safety is paramount in high speed sports, especially for the drivers. No one wants more crashes or toppling cars. We want good interesting driving, and more challenges, not wheel to wheel bashing. This isn't Jason Statham's Death Race lol:

He's talking the right points, very much; I remember tweeting about this during the WC final on how three (final) games are going in parallel, all in London (Cricket, Tennis, F1) and how Lewis would have found very limited supporters enjoying his win as compared to the other two wins across London.

But his suggestions are not feasible as he puts it across. Instead, F1 should bring back some of the earlier situations - allow multiple tire companies, flexible tire and fuel strategies, and be more flexible for the cars to differentiate. I remember those days when a Williams car meant more power and speed on the straights vs others who were more nimble on the curves.

From 2021 onwards Formula 1 will have:

Cars that are better able to battle on the track.

A more balanced competition on the track.

A sport where success is determined more by how well a team spends its money not how much it spends – including, for the first time, a fully enforceable cost cap $175M per season in the FIA rules.

A sport that is a better business for those participating and more attractive to potential new entrants.

A sport that continues to be the world’s premier motor racing competition and the perfect showcase of cutting-edge technology.
