Wow! Interesting times ahead.
I don't see this is as affecting the driver market at all actually. Fact is neither Merc nor Ferrari has considered Ricciardo an option, not with Lewis and Vettel still there.

What I'm curious about is, surely RB are looking long term, not just 2 years. With new regulations, no new engine manufacturer will be able to jump right in and be competitive from day one. Which means toro Rosso to be the guinea pig once again in 2021 with a new manufacturer.. Aston Martin? The option exists!

Honda is not shy away from investing the millions that Renualt are doing, trying to play smart. They have the money to throw at their F1 project.

If they were looking at immediate success Renault would be the safer option, I dont see Honda performance getting at par with Mercedes next year. 2020 more likely.

Interesting times indeed, with one big regret of not seeing Alonso in a quick car again.. quick F1 car i must add. The remaining world of motorsport is his Oyster.

Post 3yrs of Honda, post McLaren's current team (bizarre) struggles, it has been an extremely harsh long lesson of learning it the hard way. But he has. Wiser, kinder, without the need for intra team politics. New man. New team man.

Alonso 2.0

I don't understand the need for shifting to Honda power. The Renault engine isn't bad at all; way better than the current Honda engine at least. The results show that for sure. Ricciardo is fighting in the front; hell he has even won twice already. Why go to an engine like Honda which hasn't settled down yet?

McLaren's problem is clearly the chassis and not the engine. But even with this problem, they have scored more points this year than they did with the Honda engines in the past 03 years.

Ferrari's culture of the 'No 1 & No 2 Driver' is old school and they want to keep it that way. Even in their current scenario, Kimi is being 'forced' to play the No 2 driver. They would never want someone like Lewis, Ricciardo, Alonso, etc to ruffle the feathers of Vettel.

German publication Sports Bild reports Ricciardo has been offered a multi-year deal worth $20 million per year contract. Even Helmut Marko has reported McLaren have been increasing their offer from a few weeks.
Looks like Alonso might leave after the session after all.

This is it then, confirmation Alonso is leaving.

Doesnt make sense to me getting Ricciardo. The car is in shambles, with no answers as to why. Better to invest that money into car development than a driver if you are just fighting to get into Q3.

Though I cant imagine why Ricciardo will accept. Even if they upped it to $30m. Red Bull will be doubling his salary anyway, at the very least!
McLaren are miles off Red Bull.

Its a real shame that CRASHtappen is being paid much more than Ricciardo; and for what!!??

McLaren must be sure that Alonso is leaving or keeping a back up just in case Alonso does. If Alonso doesn't, Vandoorne might be the sacrificial lamb just like Perez and Magnussen in the past.

McLaren do not have a choice of any other top driver who would join them at this moment.

The car is in shambles only because of the chassis. Everyone knows this including McLaren but not admitting it. The fact is that McLaren knew this even in 2017 but had the liberty of blaming Honda as they too didn't have a reliable engine. However, in 2018 McLaren have been caught with their hand in the cookie jar.

Ricciardo may accept for a better package in terms of pay since he is being paid $4 million less than Verstappen the rookie. Even Red Bull doubles his salary, he will still be less than Verstappen.

He may also not be confident of the Honda engine since Honda; even though improved this year, are still not consistent. This year, Red Bull with the current Renault engine are fighting in the front. McLaren are making a lot of changes in their top management and are capable of turning things around quickly with the chassis.

The driver market is the hottest thing right now. Another update from Daniel Ricciardo, he expects F1 future drive solved pre-summer amid Red Bull-Honda deal.

Daniel Ricciardo says he needs to understand more about the Red Bull-Honda partnership before finalising his Formula 1 future — though hopes to conclude matters before the summer break.

McLaren have had their chassis issues ever since the Mercedes days. Wonder how long it will take them to get around it.

Haha.. he's just young and stubborn. Im sure its behind him, he really doesnt want any more questions from the press, that alone will make him avoid a crash.
But in the wet, he is superb, on a different planet compared to Ricciardo, who is below average (if not worse).

Mclaren have Lando Norris under their wings and he is a very highly rated driver in junior categories. Recently a couple of teams have approached Mclaren to loan Lando.

Stoffel is also highly rated but his performance is not on par with Alonso. I have a feeling that if Stoffel does not perform this season, he might be replaced with Lando regarding Alonso stays or not. I agree Mclaren does not have a car to fight for wins but still the way Alonso extracts every last performance available, Stoffel isn't able to.

Could be true (or not)!

Here's another Italian article indicating that Kimi has informed Ferrari that he is leaving at the end of the season, which could have set the ball rolling.

Re: Formula 1 - The 2019 Silly Season

Eric Boullier says that winning a championship is not possible if they are not a works team.

Link

Looks like they have lost hope.

His comments do make sense though. McLaren dug their own grave when they invited Merc to supply Brawn.. Then Merc took over and became a works team. That's why they switched to Honda. Same reason as Red Bull shifting to Honda as there is now a Renault works team.

But what next for them? Go back to Honda is the best way out for McLaren. Assuming Red Bull does not get works status or gets Aston engines from 2021.

Any driver changes in the Red cars can impact the system down the line. After all big 'F' is a prized drive. The Red Devils have a higher market image that even Merc.

Re: Formula 1 - The 2019 Silly Season

According to Motorsport.com today, Daniel Ricciardo will sign an extension of contract with Red bull itself.

Mercedes is expected to retain Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas, with Esteban Ocon the most likely Bottas replacement if the Finn does not get a new deal, while Ferrari will pair Sebastian Vettel with either current teammate Kimi Raikkonen or rising star Charles Leclerc.

Red Bull has long indicated its desire to keep Ricciardo, who has won seven grands prix with the team, alongside Max Verstappen.

Ricciardo is keen to close the pay gap between himself and the young Dutchman, who signed a lucrative new deal last year.

Speaking in Austria on Wednesday, ahead of Red Bull’s home grand prix this weekend, Ricciardo and Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko both declared that a new deal is “getting closer”.

Ricciardo said: “It's not over yet but it will come. Soon. The time is not far away.”

Talks were held between the two before they appeared at a promotional event on Wednesday afternoon.

Marko also used the same description Mercedes has given of Hamilton’s long-running contract saga, saying it was “just details” that needed to be clarified
Speaking to Motorsport.com before that event, Marko said “I don’t think Daniel is in a good position” in the driver market.

With Ferrari and Mercedes not offering a seat only McLaren and Renault looked like providing an alternative option, but the two teams are too far behind Red Bull in terms of competitiveness.

That means Renault will likely continue with Nico Hulkenberg and on-loan Red Bull driver Carlos Sainz Jr, who could switch to a permanent deal with the French manufacturer.

"Mercedes and Ferrari have a number one driver who is clearly declared,” said Marko.

"I know Ricciardo did not receive an offer from Ferrari.

"Renault will, as far as I know, stay with the current drivers. Above all, I don't think Renault is playing in the budget regions that Ricciardo has in mind.

"Daniel is in a situation where he has no sporting alternative to us. He probably imagined it differently.

"We want it [to continue with Ricciardo, but not at any price.”

Re: Formula 1 - The 2019 Silly Season

I think, contrary to all the hype around Ricciardo staying back at Red bull, he'll leave the team. He looks frustrated, and soon will become another Webber if he stays at Red bull. McLaren looks like the only choice for him right now, with a big unknown in terms of Redbull-Honda alliance. McLaren will pay him big !

There have been reports that Red Bull will retain Ricciardo. Ferrari could have been a choice. But Mclaren still looks difficult. McLaren has Alonso, Vandoorne and Norris.
