Circuit Information:

Car and bike races have been held on closed public roads in the area around the town of Chemnitz, Germany since the 1920s and were still taking place until as recently as 1990. It was decided, however, that the five mile course through such a densely populated area was no longer suitable and a new circuit was built five miles west of Chemnitz in 1996. Although mainly used as a driver training centre and road transport safety station, Sachsenring first hosted MotoGP in 1998 and many improvements have taken place since then, including a drastic layout enhancement in 2001. Numerous tight corners make it one of the slower tracks on the calendar but there is never any shortage of close racing action.

In Germany races attract huge crowds, and the country has produced many talented riders over the years such as Anton Mang, Rolf Waldmann and Dieter Braun. 2011 Moto2 World Champion Stefan Bradl and 2012 Moto3 title winner Sandro Cortese continue the success story in more recent times.

Marquez steals pole from Petrucci in his last possible run during the dying minutes of Q2. His penultimate run saw him 0.014s seconds down on Petrucci after a massive moment around Turn 3.

That was massive from Marquez. Somehow he keeps it going. Lorenzo had a great lap, Petrucci, just followed him, used the tow, and delivered a better lap time. Marquez had to work for this pole, and he made it stick. He was absolutely livid after the pole. The run continues, continuous 9 poles.

Re: MotoGP : The 2018 German Grand Prix

King of the Ring for the 9th year in a row!

9 poles + 9 wins on the bounce for Marquez at the Sachsenring.

I really thought we'd see a dog fight between Rossi and Marquez when the gap was 0.6s and it looked like Marquez's soft rear tyre was a disadvantage compared to Rossi's medium. Then he pulls out fastest lap after fastest lap to close the race with a 3s advantage.

Really loves COTA and Sachsenring!

Good race from both Yamahas. Vinales was very strong in the second half of the season - as always. Lorenzo, stonker of a start. But his soft tyres couldn't keep up with JL99.

Dovi looks a shadow of his 2017 persona. 77 points behind Marquez currently.

In the mid of the race, it appeared that there would be a dogfight by the end, when the difference narrowed down to 0.6 and Rossi put the fastest lap of the race, but no, despite on softer tires, MM put on blazing fast laps.

What was with Lorenzo on the end of the straight, trying to take out Rossi when braking?

The soft tyres gave up sooner, he was running wide almost on every single lap post the 19th lap.

This race was boring compared to the Assen one.

Re: MotoGP : The 2018 German Grand Prix

Gosh! What a stranglehold Marc has at this track. To have pole and wins since 2010 is astounding, beggars belief! This race did not have the excitement of Assen and now Dovi, Rossi and company can kiss this years tittle goodbye. Marc already has one hand on the trophy. Without the shenanigans of Argentina, MM's lead would have been much bigger than the 46 points he has heading into the summer break.

Does anyone know what's going on with Johann Zarco? The commentators hinted at something in his personal life due to which his head is not in the right place.

I had the same question but someone else pointed out that since Tech3 is going to KTM next year, it could be that Yamaha has just stopped giving them new parts and support....

That too and also that he's having some trouble with his manager. Another reason could be that KTM is struggling at the moment and is looking rather longingly at the Yamaha satellite seat that is still open, a bike he know well and is sure to be competitive on. Of course this is all conjecture at this moment.

Problems of Yamaha surfaced last year after Jerez. Given that he is riding the same bike as Rossi/Vinales' last year bike, maybe Zarco is facing the same problems faced by the factory riders then, and he too is not able to turn it around now.

But something is messy for sure; he didn't sport the usual smiling/calm face.

Vinales running similar/better pace than the leaders at the closing stages of races makes me feel for him. If only he had better pace during initial laps, championship would have been in a different dimension.
