If everything goes well, team Mercedes have this in their bag. Hope Lewis wins this and puts an end to an already weakening challenge from Sebastian.

Interesting to see Mercedes opting for less number of Hypersofts compared to everyone on the grid. Maybe cause there car doesn't work well on the Hyper??

Hopefully not. So that this goes right to the wire. Ferrari were strong in Sochi last year. And this year with a much improved and faster car, they should do well but then they were to do well in Singapore as well and it fell apart for them. Fingers crossed.

With their confused pit wall and a distracted Vettel I dont see how this will go down to the wire, maybe even if he wins here in Russia. Mercedes will definitely bounce back in the rest of the races given that they are working as a team to crown Lewis as champion.

Well, FP3 was a fascinating duel between the Prancing Horses and the Silver Arrows. Ending with Vettel trying to push his car back to the garage as he was unable to cross the exit of the pitlane before the light turned red. Both Ferrari's six tenths down on the Mercs. Ferrari look off the pace if FP3 is anything to go by. Vettel seems to be under incredible pressure seemingly the only guy who wants to win the WDC for Ferrari, with Raikkonen seemingly not giving two hoots and a pitwall that is confused as it what it wants and wondering whether it should want what it actually wants.

The only way Ferrari have a chance at the WDC is if Vettel manages to win every one of the next 6 races. A one-two in every race would be a fabulous thing and would get Ferrari the constructors trophy as well. But it is looking increasing difficult against a well oiled Mercedes team that just can't seem to put a foot wrong at the moment.

Ferrari have fallen apart. Failed to take advantage when they had the clearly superior car for 4-5 races either side of the summer break, and Merc have now edged ahead seemingly having sorted their traction and tire-wear issues.

Bottas suckered into losing a win yet again. They make what Ferrari did in Monza look exemplary. With a 40 point lead surely Bottas could have been given his rightful win. This is exactly what Rosberg did not let them do in his last year with the team. No point in Lewis looking glum after that. As Vettel said in the post race interview, Valteri did help Hamilton beat Vettel by backing up Vettel immediately after the pitstop.

But all points to Vettel and Ferrari for making a fight for it. The pit stop strategy just about handed them a win. As usual Raikkonen was having his own championship race...just in some other formula of his.

Drive on,
Shibu.

Re: Formula 1: The 2018 Russian Grand Prix

The podium reminded me of Schumacher and Barichello in which Schumacher gave him the first place trophy and made him stand on the first place podium.

Sad that they couldn't just let him win one race when Hamilton has the WDC done and dusted almost. The Constructors Championship wouldn't have been affected if Bottas kept his place.

Re: Formula 1: The 2018 Russian Grand Prix

Finally, it looks like Hamilton will be the first Hungarian GP winner to win a title since Schumacher did it. 50 points , 5 races to go. If it goes like this, he will seal it probably in Mexico. Super drive by Max, it's a shame Ricciardo had damaged front wing. Still both finished P5 P6. I was hoping, Max attempted to go all the way on softs.
Brilliant move by Leclerc. I hope he gives Lewis hard time next year.
Lastly, Bottas is a gem of a person!

Re: Formula 1: The 2018 Russian Grand Prix

While the 40 point lead could have given us the impression that Mercedes could have let Bottas have the win, I think it was more from a reliability point of view as being towards the tail end of the season, with all 3 allotted power units already in play it give Mercedes and Lewis the room to account for any penalties that may arise from potential reliability issues and engine changes which would possibly cause him to start at the back of the grid in any of the future races. Team orders have happened before in F1, and this probably won't be the last of it, so fair play to Mercedes. Valtteri kind of knows he has an unofficial support role in the team to Lewis, and surely this must have been something they discussed in the morning. Whoever says they didn't see this coming is kidding themselves, honestly.

What is surprising is is the sudden slump in Ferrari's performance. This time there were no driver errors or bad strategy calls from the pit wall, just pure lack of performance in the package.

Re: Formula 1: The 2018 Russian Grand Prix

That look on the face of Bottas after looking at Hamilton's rear tyres for any blisters.

Mercedes could have told Bottas to move over stating the strengthening of WDC for Hamilton and he would have happily oblidged. No need of this rear tyre blisters and all those stuff, which lead Bottas to believe that he may get his place back in the final laps. Alas, what he got was, “The positions stay as they are. We will talk after the race.”

Re: Formula 1: The 2018 Russian Grand Prix

Its a Shame! Bottas was under the impression that he will get back the position at the end. But his management had other ideas. A P1 would helped Bottas to increase the gap with Kimi in driver standings. Currently its just 3 points.

Excellent move by Hamilton on Vettel, Leclerc on Magnussen and a fantastic drive by Verstappen.

In Singapore Force India got stuck behind Sirotkin and this time Magnussen. Otherwise, they could have made more points and got closer to Mclaren.

Re: Formula 1: The 2018 Russian Grand Prix

Has nobody heard of "it's not over, till it's done". While there is a mathematical chance for Vettel/Ferrari to come back into the game, it would be stupid to take any other approach.

Bottas "sacrificed" his win, but that's what's expected from him in any case, isn't it?

It's a cold blooded approach and this is a cold blooded world. Simple

Cheers

Re: Formula 1: The 2018 Russian Grand Prix

Hamilton's overtake of Vettel was indeed super, however with the power advantage Merc have over Ferrari that was bound to happen sooner than later. I ought to think that the fact Vettel was within both the Mercedes was down to Verstappen leading the race for fair number of laps holding up both the cars. Once he pitted both Hamilton and Bottas put up the fastest laps. Wondering where all those power 'gained' in Spa were vanished for Ferrari. So, that was indeed due to the slimmer rear wing they ran in Spa.

Only silver lining for Ferrari is the superb show by Leclerc which earned him the deserving best of the rest title. Finally, Ferrari was beaten fair and square by a powerful team which was well 'managed'.

From what I heard somewhere, is that Vettel is getting frustrated in both having to manage the pit strategy and race together. At Red Bull, all he needed to do was race as Red Bull had his back strategy wise
