Earlier this year, the FIA confirmed that there will be a brand new ‘Hypercar’ class in the World Endurance Championship (WEC). This new ‘Hypercar’ class is to replace the LMP1 class as the flagship of the racing series from the 2020/21 season onwards.
The cars will need to be based on a production hyper car design with atleast 20 homologated, road legal cars. The teams are given a free hand for the choice of engines.
Quote:
The choice of engine is completely free, from small-capacity turbo motors to large-displacement naturally aspirated engines with a maximum output of 740bhp (520kW), while one 200kW (264bhp) electric motor is allowed which must be fitted to the front axle. Minimum weights for the engine (180kg), battery (70kg) and electric motor (50kg) are, according to the FIA, easily achievable, which will prevent manufacturers developing hugely expensive ultra-lightweight systems. Performance will also be controlled by fuel consumption limits which are designed to prevent expensive engine development.

The most intriguing part however is that the rules say that a ballast of 0.5kg will be added for every championship point the car will earn. However the maximum ballast each car will earn is capped at 50kgs. This ballast will be removed for the season finale, The 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Many manufacturers have shown intrest in this new ‘Hypercar’ class with the likes of Toyota, Aston Martin and Glickenhaus confirmed to field their cars. Gordon Murray is in talks to enter his hyper car, the T.50 into the series.
McLaren, Lamborghini and Peugeot are also considering an entry in 2022 which means there will be production hyper cars coming from the companies.
Aston Martin Valkyrie
The Valkyrie was one of the first cars to be confirmed in the series. The car powered by a 6.5l V12 built by Cosworth. Reports say that the race car will rev higher than the 11,100rpm limit of the road car.

The manufacturer announcer that it will compete in the class using a race spec version of its upcoming production hyper car, the GR Super Sport. A concept of the GR Super Sport derived from a TS050 race car was revealed at the Tokyo Auto Show earlier almost two years ago. The concept packed a couple of electric motors along with a 2.4l twin turbo V6, the combination churning out 986bhp.

McLaren
The company was reviewing its options for the WEC 2022 season according to their CEO. Since their hyper car, the Speedtail is just around the block, we can speculate an entry but a GTE class car based on the Senna is more probable.
ByKolles Racing
The German racing team is already in WEC said they would consider entering the series with a car based on their current ENSO prototype racer.
