On the new 'Hypercar' class in the World Endurance Championship

Earlier this year, the FIA confirmed that there will be a brand new ‘Hypercar’ class in the World Endurance Championship (WEC). This new ‘Hypercar’ class is to replace the LMP1 class as the flagship of the racing series from the 2020/21 season onwards.

The cars will need to be based on a production hyper car design with atleast 20 homologated, road legal cars. The teams are given a free hand for the choice of engines.

Quote:
The choice of engine is completely free, from small-capacity turbo motors to large-displacement naturally aspirated engines with a maximum output of 740bhp (520kW), while one 200kW (264bhp) electric motor is allowed which must be fitted to the front axle. Minimum weights for the engine (180kg), battery (70kg) and electric motor (50kg) are, according to the FIA, easily achievable, which will prevent manufacturers developing hugely expensive ultra-lightweight systems. Performance will also be controlled by fuel consumption limits which are designed to prevent expensive engine development.
Quoted from https://www.evo.co.uk/news/21388/fia...hypercar-class

The most intriguing part however is that the rules say that a ballast of 0.5kg will be added for every championship point the car will earn. However the maximum ballast each car will earn is capped at 50kgs. This ballast will be removed for the season finale, The 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Many manufacturers have shown intrest in this new ‘Hypercar’ class with the likes of Toyota, Aston Martin and Glickenhaus confirmed to field their cars. Gordon Murray is in talks to enter his hyper car, the T.50 into the series.

McLaren, Lamborghini and Peugeot are also considering an entry in 2022 which means there will be production hyper cars coming from the companies.

Aston Martin Valkyrie

The Valkyrie was one of the first cars to be confirmed in the series. The car powered by a 6.5l V12 built by Cosworth. Reports say that the race car will rev higher than the 11,100rpm limit of the road car.

Toyota GR Super Sport

The manufacturer announcer that it will compete in the class using a race spec version of its upcoming production hyper car, the GR Super Sport. A concept of the GR Super Sport derived from a TS050 race car was revealed at the Tokyo Auto Show earlier almost two years ago. The concept packed a couple of electric motors along with a 2.4l twin turbo V6, the combination churning out 986bhp.

Glickenhaus SCG 007

Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus, a race car manufacturer confirmed they will be competing in the class too fielding the SCG 007. Renders of the car was released by the company earlier this year and rumor has it the car will be powered by a 3.0l twin turbo V6.

Peugeot

The company said they will be entering the class from the 2022 season onwards on twitter. It is though they are going to use an overhauled version of their 908 prototype racer.

Gordon Murray Automotive T.50

The legend is reportedly in talks to enter his upcoming hyper car, the T.50 to the series. The car is deemed to be the successor of the McLaren F1 (which he designed) is powered by a 3.9l V12 that revs to an incredible 12,000rpm.

Lamborghini

The company’s boss said in an interview to Autocar that they are considering an entry into the class. He also said that they did not have the resources to develop a new car for the purpose but instead will do something like the Aventador SC 18.

Other potential manufacturers

McLaren

The company was reviewing its options for the WEC 2022 season according to their CEO. Since their hyper car, the Speedtail is just around the block, we can speculate an entry but a GTE class car based on the Senna is more probable.

ByKolles Racing

The German racing team is already in WEC said they would consider entering the series with a car based on their current ENSO prototype racer.

Porsche & Ferrari

Could the new regulations for the upcoming seasons lure Porsche back? Will Ferrari foray into the hyper car class? The successors of the Porsche 918 Spyder and Ferrari LaFerrari could feature in this class someday.

To all those who watch WEC, what are your thoughts on this new 'Hypercar' class?

Re: On the new 'Hypercar' class in the World Endurance Championship

Excellent, I was tired of looking at the boxy LMP1s anyway. The best thing about WEC is the way the rules are designed-fix fuel flow limit and let the constructors worry about specifications of the powertrain. This makes the strategies intriguing and races more exciting than F1 (even the 24 hours of Le Mans).

The homologation rule will ensure street legal (barely) hyper cars make a big entrance into the WEC. Miss the days when Mclaren F1 GTRs, Jaguar XJRs, Bentleys, Merc CLK-GTRs and Porsche 911 GT1s tore up the circuits (especially Circuit De La Sarthe). Now we can see all the project cars like the Valkyrie, AMG Project one etc on the track. Wish Koenigsegg and Pagani also enter with their superb Agera and Huayra!

Guess who is coming back guys.

Balance has been restored in the world. When you are as good at racing as Porsche are, it is indeed a joy to see them back. But this news would send shivers down the spine of the competition. I am paraphrasing one of the comments under the video because it felt so apt. All credits to the original author

I would have preferred to see Porsche entering the LMH class vs. using another manufacturers chassis. If Glickenhaus can do LMH, so can Porsche.

Re: On the new 'Hypercar' class in the World Endurance Championship

Toyota on Friday revealed its contender developed for the new Le Mans Hypercar class of the World Endurance Championship. It's called the GR010 Hybrid, and it's an evolution of the TS050 Hybrid LMP1 racer.

Toyota has developed the GR010 Hybrid alongside the road car. The race car features a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 rated at 670 horsepower at the rear axle and a electric motor-generator rated at 268 hp at the front axle. System output is capped at 670 hp, meaning the two power sources in the GR010 Hybrid are never running at their respective peaks at the same time.

Re: On the new 'Hypercar' class in the World Endurance Championship

Peugeot pulled the cover off of its new 9X8 Hypercar.

This new hypercar faced less stringent regulations during its development process. This has resulted in a car that forgoes a traditional rear wing entirely, instead using the rear diffuser and an aerodynamic floor to generate the required downforce.

Peugeot Sport will campaign two 9X8s during the 2022 FIA World Endurance Championship.

Re: On the new 'Hypercar' class in the World Endurance Championship

I visited the Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus factory a week ago. Really impressive and I think the SCG 007 will be competitive with all the major manufacturers entries.
