My job in Formula 1: The helmet manager

Quote:

I am a racing manager at Bell Helmets, working with F1 drivers. My job is to prepare helmets for all of our drivers and try to find new ones, who want to use Bell helmets in Formula 1.

This year we work in F1 with Lewis Hamilton, Lando Norris, Kimi Raikkonen, Antonio Giovinazzi, George Russell, Nicolas Latifi, Romain Grosjean, Kevin Magnussen, Esteban Ocon, Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez.

My first job is to prepare all the helmets for the weekend. Normally I would ready for each driver two helmets for dry weather and one for wet. If the forecast says it is going to be rainy weekend, I'd make it the other way around.

Most important thing in my job…

To always have an answer. When the driver calls me and tells he's got a problem or he needs something, I need to have a solution at that exact moment. As soon as he calls, you can't waste time thinking about it for 10 or 15 minutes. I have to have the solution immediately.

Ps: I have a helmet fetish.

Seems like a highly specialised and cool job. I wonder who amongst that list is the most demanding driver

Probably Hamilton. My next post will illustrate why.

I really love the new Hamilton helmet.

Thanks to bhpian no_fear’s elder brother I got my hands on a very very rare and a very very special helmet.

This is a 2009 Lewis Hamilton Official Replica promotional helmet which has been painted by JLF Designs who have been designing and painting helmets for LH from his karting days.

The base helmet is an Arai GP 5 and these were created for the team and sponsors and were not available for general public. I initially thought this is a 2008 model, but was confused with the serial number 39/09 and thought maybe this is number 9 of 39 totally built. But after some more research found that this is piece number 39 of the 2009 model. The main difference in the 2009 model is the addition of the cartoon of LH spinning the decks at the back of the helmet. Since these are made in limited numbers and most of them will be in private collections getting more information is a real challenge.

P.S - I am yet to see it personally as its still out of the country and not in my possession yet.

Great thread idea red_liner.

For anyone who is a F1 fan, follow F1 Helmets (https://twitter.com/F1HLM) on twitter. Those guys have done a great job with regular updates and even bring up the older designs.
