2020 Eifel (German) Grand Prix - Nürburgring (09-11 October)

The German Grand Prix is back, but this time in "The Green Hell!" - The famed Nürburgring. The circuit was one of two circuits which used to play host to the German Grand Prix, before falling into bankruptcy in 2015. The Nürburgring was used in odd-numbered years, with the Hockenheimring taking the even-numbered years, though no German Grand Prix was held at either circuit in 2015 and 2017, seasons alloted to the Nürburgring. The circuit has also hosted the Luxembourg Grand Prix and European Grand Prix in the past.

The Nürburgring has undergone several major changes in its history, from the 22.8km Nordschleife and 28.3km Gesamtstrecke to the 5.148km GP-Strecke which is used currently. The Nordschleife layout, used for 22 Formula One World Championship events between 1951 and 1976, is second only to the Pescara Circuit in Italy in terms of the longest circuits ever used in F1.

The current layout of the GP-Strecke was first used in 2002, and has been used nine times since. After an absence in Formula One for seven years, it was announced on July 24 that the circuit will host as the 11th round of the 2020 Formula One Season, the race named as the Eifel Grand Prix, replacing the canceled races due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The green Hell (Nordscheifle) part of the circuit had been removed after Niki Lauda's horrific crash in 1976 which made the track lose some of its charm. Nevertheless, this track still holds the position for one of the best in this year's calendar.

Pirelli has gone for compounds C2, C3 & C4 while their boss believes that there is a high probability of using all 5 compounds (Dry & Wet).

Awesome montage! Let's hope the race is actually half as exciting. Given the low track temps exp, Mercedes are expected to perform even better. Though Maxstappen and Red Bull might be able to reign them in given the average lap speed is not that high, plenty of camber and off camber corners.

The only problem with passing with the wider cars today is that the track is quite narrow and chicanes are quite high.

Re: 2020 Eifel (German) Grand Prix - Nürburgring (09-11 October)

Well as they say was a dead rubber today. Both FP1 and FP2 cancelled due to fog. Wonder if they are going to be able to have a race there over the weekend. The weather forecast shows a bit of sun tommorrow but back to an fog and rain on Sunday. Would be interesting to see how these cars fare without the benefit of setup. Frankly the Covid pandemic has given us some pretty interesting races.

I suggest they cancel qualifying, use a simulator to run the qualifying laps on a standard car and setup. Teams should setup cars as best they could and set the drivers loose on Sunday. That would be an interesting race to watch. We might just get a lot of rookies on the front of the grid making for an interesting race.

Another power circuit with just two low speed corners. Not going to be an easy circuit for the Ferrari powered cars. Perhaps they might opt to use Vettel as a rear brake again to score some points.

Drive on,

Qualifying today is on Tata Sky - Star Sports 3 @ 1830. HD channels are showing cricket or the French Open.

Ferraris in p3 and p5 in FP3. Apparently the limited free practice has suited them!

I think as a cost cutting move they should cut the free practices to just 1 or do away with it entirely. Looking forward to the qualifying and the race tommorrow. I hope F1 uses these as inputs for devising a more competitive approach.

Brilliant qualifying effort from everyone. I was super impressed with almost every driver giving it everything on every lap!

Special mention ofcourse to Leclerc, easily the best of the rest and even pipping albon. Hope it’s a closely contested race tomorrow with some rain to spice things up.

Re: 2020 Eifel (German) Grand Prix - Nürburgring (09-11 October)

Brilliant to see race at a different track. Very technical. Shoutout to Hulkenberg, who made it to qualifying. Bottas finally delivered the punch.
And what to say about Leclerc, he's performing at a top level. Shame Ferrari are not upto the mark this season.
It will be interesting to see how the point gaps change. As of now car no. 44 leads car no. 77 by 44 points, and car no. 77 leads car no. 33 by 33 points.

Very Interesting! And obviously HAM and VER is separated by 77 (BOT), both literally and figuratively!

Here's how they can maintain the numerology some what:

Option 1:
BOT P5+FLAP, netting him 11 points while HAM and VER DNF or out of points.
New gaps:
HAM-33-BOT-44-VER

Option 2:
They all DNF or finish out of points, so everything remains same!

What's more likely though: They all finish how they qualified with BOT FLAP.
New gaps:
HAM-36-BOT-44-VER

HAM to BOT gap no longer follows the pattern but BOT and VER now have 44 between them. That would be like stating the race result itself.

Re: 2020 Eifel (German) Grand Prix - Nürburgring (09-11 October)

This is the kind of laps that Bottas needs to produce. Purple in all sectors!! If he can repeat this level of consistency and speed, Hamilton is going to be put under pressure. The run into the Yokohoma S is going to be critical, and important that he does not botch his start. The inside line into the hair pin looks critical and it is a pretty decent run down to it as well around 700 meters.

Great lap by Leclerc to split the Red Bulls too. If lucky we may see some fiesty action between Verstappen and Red Bull. Vettel just missed Q3 by a tenth of a second. On the whole, I never expected the Ferraris to be this strong.

Renaults are pretty strong in recent races. Both Riccardo and Ocon qualifying P5 and P6 respectively.

After many successive forays into Q2, it seems like Russell's run has been interrupted in the last two races. Both Mclaren's made it into the top ten though.

Interesting to see what the Hulk can come up with. I assume that he would have an early pit stop change over to the hardest compounds and wait for the race to come to him.

Gary Anderson's column in the-race.com offers and interesting insight into car setup, the impact of cold on the tyres which may affect drivers in tommorrow's race.

Re: 2020 Eifel (German) Grand Prix - Nürburgring (09-11 October)

Always a nice Quali when Hamilton's not on Pole. Hope Max gets him into Turn 1 to set the race up nicely.

Great lap by LeClerc, extracting the maximum from that car..embarrassing a 4 time WDC!
Cant understand what Seb is upto. He is quite poor at adapting his driving style.

Albon in P4 gives Red Bull a bit of flexibility in race strategy.

The Renault vs McLaren vs Racing Point battle is the real championship now.

Always nice to see the Hulk back.

Re: 2020 Eifel (German) Grand Prix - Nürburgring (09-11 October)

Bottas may make a mess of the start as he has done many times and make excuses like the birds and the bees. He has these periods of brilliance and then back to mediocrity.

Verstappen should get both of them (Ham and Bottas) at the start, it will be fun for us.

Maybe an accident at the start on the first almost hairpin turn and we begin with a safety car.

What a track! Hoping for an exiting race.

Cheers

The point about hoping for someone to gain by a DNF from your competing car works vice versa. Bottas DNF but I would want to see him win fighting it with Hamilton and Max to be worthy enough.

I am not hoping for DNF for anyone. My post was to show how the gaps play out in different scenarios in response to fz_rider's observation.
