Formula 1: 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix - Sakhir (27-29 November)

Formula 1 starts its triple-header finale of the reshuffled 2020 calendar with the Bahrain Grand Prix at the Bahrain International Circuit.

The Bahrain International Circuit is set for sunny conditions for the race weekend, with a high chance of cloud cover for all three days of track action, but a minimal chance of rain. Across the weekend highs of 27 degrees Celsius are forecast - around 14 degrees hotter than the recent Emilia Romagna GP and Turkish GP.

Pirelli has opted for its middle range of compounds for the Bahrain GP, with the hard tyre C2, medium tyre C3 and soft tyre C4.

Now that the championships have been decided, I hope they all race for the pure joy of racing as opposed to preserving positions!

Re: Formula 1: 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix - Sakhir (27-29 November)

So, the race begins at 5:10pm local time. It is going to be similar to Abu Dhabi - begins at twilight and ends under the lights. I did not know Bahrain track was lit this way, I remember all races in Bahrain being run in full daylight.

The last 3 races are going to be all about the mid field runners, be it drivers championship or constructors championship.
Perez, LeClerc, and Ricciardo are on 100, 97, and 96 points respectively and fighting for 4th place. Sainz Jr., Norris, Albon, Gasly, Stroll are all separated by 16 points and fighting for 7th - any of them, with luck, could even push the drivers duking it out for 4th down to 8th or even 9th.
Ferrari and Renault (6th & 5th respectively) are separated by 6 points, Racing Point and McLaren (3rd & 4th respectively) are separated by 5 points.

No point following these races for Hamilton, Bottas or Verstappen. I will be keenly following the mid-field runners. That is the more interesting race to watch.

Re: Formula 1: 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix - Sakhir (27-29 November)

Qualifying did not throw up any surprises did it? The reqular line-up in P1, P2 and P3. Lewis Hamilton on pole, Bottas on P2 clueless as to why and Verstappen pragmatic that the RB just does not have the lungs to out perform Mercedes.

A surprise was Stroll. Kind of expected him in Q3 after having managed P2 in Q1. I think a lot of teams had their strategies disturbed by Sainz's McLaren stalling on the track and the subsequent red flag.

Russell impressed as usual punting the Williams into Q2.After the shunt yesterday, Albon would have heaved a sign of relief to line up in P4 alongside Verstappen.

In the absence of Binotto, Vettel seems to have got a gear or two having out qualified his team mate again after last race. Remains to be seen whether he can pull of that awesome start like in Turkey!

Drive on,
Shibu.

Someone walking out of that horrendous crash is a miracle in itself!

The HAAS of Romain is in 2 pieces and he went across the barrier in the front part. One has to see to believe it!

Oh no what a crash. It is so unusual to see a F1 car blast. That is not expected, good news is that he walked out but injuries could be severe. The halo saved him as seen on images. Wish no sever injury to Gorsjean and wish him a quick recovery.

Reminder of how dangerous this sport can be.

OMG. That was horrendous. I am so happy that he came out relatively unscathed. It is a miracle considering the condition of the car.

What a horrific crash for Romain. Never seen something like it for a long long time.
Happy to see Romain getting out of the accident without major injuries. The driver cockpit is completely gutted by fire.

Kudos to F1 for the safety measures and the quick extraction of Romain from the fire. Halo and the fireproof suit saved him for sure.

Why do they have protruded area in between when the track is straight? Isnt that more dangerous?

Scary stuff. Good to hear Romain is ok.

He’s got minor burns and suspected broken ribs.

That crash was really horrifying! I’m just glad that he could walk out of the fire alive! And yeah, Kudos to FIA for saving him on time.

They seem to be adding concrete barriers now. So I guess the race will not be averted. About half an hour till restart

Re: Formula 1: 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix - Sakhir (27-29 November)

What an absolutely horrible crash!

On board video of Grojean has still not been shared but a few angles, especially from across the safety car actually show Roman pushing himself out of that massive ball of fire as his cockpit is being pummeled with the extinguisher is unreal
Hats off to the track and safety teams who were on site within seconds and also an amazing testimony to the crash worthiness of an F1 car. For a driver to jump over a barrier and walk away after having first survived a deceleration that cleaved the car into two pieces and sent one wheel bouncing around the track and another wheel over the barrier and then exploding into a ball of fire!

That part of the barrier is part of the service track which are used to remove cars from the active track, hence the road and barrier are angled out.

The crash we saw today is a one in a million possibility as the car went in straight in. The barriers did their job of stopping the car and so did the driver cockpit and the survival cell. A big thanks to Halo, this is what really saved Romain.

A serious investigation is needed to determine the cause of the fire. The fuel tanks are carbon fibre membrane which can tolerate a bullet fired into the tank. The car was also full of fuel since this is at the start of the race. This could be an oil fire rather than fuel fire.

That was extreme, especially in this day and age of f1.
However, how about the rest of the field? That was one of the most demolition derby type starts I've ever seen, ever since Coulthard went sightseeing in Belgium!

The commentary is saying that it was fuel in the lines that caused the inferno. It is just a speculation by them but there is no way just Oil (As suggest by someone) can burn like that. It has to be fuel or in hind sight the batteries we all know how the batteries can burn instantaneously.

A lot of research will be needed on this so that this never happens again.

So glad to see him out of the car, he is lucky he was not knocked out on impact else it would have been very different. Just glad he is out.
