Re: The 2022 Formula 1 (Silly) Season Thread!

The bigger change is putting Herbie Blash back in to support the Race Director, and streamlining the team-race control conversation channels.

It's easy to bag on Masi, but putting one man in to replace ONE aspect of a well-respected Whiting's role (who juggled multiple roles), then neither filling the other roles nor providing a support structure for the most highly-visible aspect of it, the bigger surprise is it took 3 seasons to become the mess it did.

Add to that, one of the race directors is the one who headed the 2021 DTM Season and that disastrous finale. Don’t know if this will be beneficial in any way.

The W13 was out on track today and even though the sponsor placements and numbers are a big change from the renders, boy, does it look good!

Re: The 2022 Formula 1 (Silly) Season Thread!

My thoughts!

1) The Merc looks like it means business. So sleek, tidy and beautiful. Scary too if they have improved upon that monster Brazil spec PU. Takes me right back to 2014 when the W05 looked every bit fast and sexy among a bunch of very very weird and slower machines. Not a good omen for the season.

2) Red Bull - I got no idea apart from the livery. I am not going to comment on a very grainy pic from the shakedown.

3) No one will complain Ferrari wasn't brave or aggressive. Kudos to the team for that. Love the livery and the car looks good, but I am still not sure about that nose. But then again, we are going to see a lot of changes in the run up to Bahrain. Think Ferrari has gone for a base package which can be developed massively right through the season. My main worry is the PU though! They have gone in a completely different direction to other teams. And I will ignore the side pods for the time being - I haven't seen anything like that on a race car! Let's hope the team got it right. The sport needs a fast Ferrari, its been too many years now!

4) McLaren looks very sleek and they have gone for the jugular with the suspension. I was joking with my friends that Lando will probably do a J turn just before the straights. Lovely livery again.

That's it for now!

Actually all teams have nailed the livery! Its a beautiful field of cars. And I have no idea if one team will run away with it or we will see a lot of mixing and matching as teams work out the right setup through a race weekend at least initially. Reading through the claims on the claw back of downforce across teams, I am not very sure about the latter now. Let's wait for the tests.

Re: The 2022 Formula 1 (Silly) Season Thread!

First shots of the Race spec RedBull car has surfaced and here it is. Looks fast. Very fast.

Almost every single team has a different take on aero design this season, specially those sidepods. Only time can tell who has nailed it.

Red Bull looks like its alien. Mean.
Cant believe Newey will get it wrong. This is his playground.

The closest a team has come to Red Bull sidepods - Alpine
Not as exploitive though.

I am sure Red Bull are testing out different floor pieces, there's no way they would leave out that much of a real estate for the sponsors on the side pod.

You can clearly see the points where the floor is being attached to the body frame, remove it and test another piece.

The cars will look entirely different from now to Bahrain, race 1.

What did the F1 engineers tell the fans after the first day of testing?

Its really cool to see and understand this wide variety of interpretations across the board! I really did worry that the cars are going to look alike, maybe it will, as soon as the order of performance is established.

And I have a feeling the lap times we saw yesterday is going to tumble massively. Maybe at Barcelona itself. Can't wait for March!

Re: The 2022 Formula 1 (Silly) Season Thread!

The RedBull sidepods and their unwillingness to reveal any part of their car is making me think that it might be the biggest differentiator from the competition. The design feels odd but after going through a number of much more technically-inclinced individuals' opinions, it seems it makes a lot of sense.

The cars do look fantastic in the sun, especially the Mclaren, Mercedes & Ferraris. Well done for making them stand out so much.

Re: The 2022 Formula 1 (Silly) Season Thread!

Looks like porpoising is being reported widely and across all teams - an issue that they will be hoping to resolve by Bahrain.

However, the question remains whether they will solve the porpoising issue while retaining aerodynamic/general efficiency. Ferrari seems to be confident about resolving it without compromising efficiency.

Meanwhile there’s a huge question mark on Haas’s title sponsor Ural Kali and if Mazepin will continue given the present situation with Russia and Ukraine.
