2022 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix | Jeddah Street Circuit | 25-28th March, 2022

Formula 1 returns to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at Jeddah. Last year's race was insane (atleast for me), full of controversy and action. What does this year's race hold? We'll know soon.

Oil storage or refinery just few km from the track is on fire, possibly due to a missile attack. Those US patriot missile defense systems have a dodgy hit to kill ratio.

Aramco's facility a few kilometres off the track has been hit. F1 has called a meeting for the drivers and constructors this very moment. More news soon.

And there are F1 reasons to ban this race too! This track is a farce when it comes to safety and shouldn't have gotten the green light to host races, especially not in 2021. There were changes made to the circuit, compared to last year, but it is nearly not enough! There was a moment for Lewis and Albon yesterday and there will be more!

Coming to qualifying, if all goes well, Max will most probably nick it.

Qualifying and even the race tomorrow should be interesting considering Ferrari were not able to complete their objectives yesterday after the brush against the walls. Red Bull meanwhile were not able to get good runs on their softs.

Apparently the event is still going on despite the Missile Attack, but the tensions in the paddock are high, similar to what it was during the start (or lack of) of 2020 Australian GP. It is a blemish on the event for sure as the fire blazes on and is expected to last for 1-2 days since this was an oil depot that was targeted.

Doesn't sound like they have much of a choice.

Quote:
BBC Sport has learned that a significant number of drivers had concerns about the safety of the event following the attack.

But eventually they were convinced to go ahead and race after being given further information by bosses.

Part of this information involved the possible consequences of not racing, such as how easily teams and drivers would be able to leave the country if the race did not happen.

What do they mean by " such as how easily teams and drivers would be able to leave the country if the race did not happen".

Are they implying they would not be allowed to leave the country?

Am not sure how it works for tourists but if you go on a business/work visa, the host needs to countersign the visa before you leave.

Getting people, equipment and material in & out of a country involves an enormous amount of paperwork, and often specific bureaucratic exceptions beyond written regulations.

It doesn't take much to throw a 'technicality' wrench in the works, if the host is so inclined.

Ok for this year, F1 should definitely reconsider if they should be coming back here next year.

Moreover this is quite a dangerous and unforgiving circuit.

Its fast, but its not like Monza, its a street circuit but its not like Monaco either.

The drivers really need to be super alert here, here Max's RedBull taking off.

Hamilton knocked out in Q3 after failing to make the top 15 for the first time since 2017. Team mate Russel finished Q3 in #4

Nasty shunt for Mick Schumacher.

I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to track design and not a fan of parking lot runoffs at all, but this track is dangerous in a bad way, even within context of racing being inherently dangerous (esp. on a street circuit).
