Volkswagen CEO confirms Audi & Porsche will enter Formula One

Audi & Porsche, the two premium German car brands part of the Volkswagen Group, will be entering Formula 1. The confirmation was made by Herbert Diess, Volkswagen's Chief Executive Officer.

Without revealing too much, Diess stated that Porsche's preparations to enter the highest class of international motor racing were a little more concrete.

The news about Volkswagen wanting to enter Formula 1 has been doing the rounds for quite a while now. Also, there were rumours about Audi taking over McLaren. However, the British team quickly clarified the rumours, denying any such change in their ownership structure.

While details are still scarce, as per earlier reports, both companies could enter the sport in 2026. That's when Formula 1 and the FIA are set to introduce new technical regulations.

Audi, Porsche to join Formula One: VW CEO

- Porsche's preparations for entering Fomula One were a little more concrete than Audi's.

- Audi is ready to offer around 500 million euros ($556.3 million) for British luxury sports carmaker McLaren as a means to enter.

- Porsche intends to establish a long-term partnership with racing team Red Bull starting in several years' time.

- Porsche will reduce other racing activities and concentrate more on that circuit.

Re: Volkswagen CEO confirms Audi & Porsche will enter Formula One

Hopefully, more teams would result in more competition and better racing. The 2026 cars are expected to be able to race even closer than today's car; should result in some good racing.

Seeing how the VW group dominated Le Mans, I guess their entry into F1 will turn out to be a successful one.

Audi puts planned Formula One entry under review.

Citing sources at parent company Volkswagen Group, the plans were being "analyzed in detail" in the wake of a management change and cost-cutting measures.

Audi completes Sauber buyout, dispels rumours about its entry into Formula 1

The German brand confirms its commitment to Formula 1 and takes over all the shares of the Sauber team.

Quote:
At the same time, the Swiss team announced that Oliver Hoffman, until now head of Audi's Technical Development Council, becomes a new member of Sauber's Board of Management, and will be above Andreas Seidl. Hoffman himself was the one who announced Audi's entry into Formula 1 in 2022, along with former Audi CEO Markus Duesmann.

Despite the change in management, the team will remain based in Switzerland as before, due to the proximity to the Audi factory. The Germans will provide a fundamental part of the car, the engine. In Neuburg they are involved with the project, and are already working on the elements of the car's powertrain, in accordance with the new 2026 regulations.

Audi dominated the diesel era with a team of excellent engineers and brilliant endurance racing drivers like Tom Kristensen, Allan McNish, Dindo Capello and co. They defeated faster Peugeot 908s which had an all F1 driver line up. It was pure strategy. Both 2008 and 2011 Le Mans events were amazing.

Then Porsche began winning with their 919s which got the better of the Toyota Gazoo Racing TS030s, before leaving in 2018 and leaving Toyota all alone to win everything.

There is absolutely no guarantee this success will translate into success in F1, even with radical rule changes. The WEC had much more road relevance and tech homologation for road cars, wonder why VW Group left their established presence in a much more road relevant series for something like F1.
