Re: Formula 1 : 2023 Season

Looks like this year it is a silly season for Team Principals!

Binnoto quits Ferrari
Jos Capito quits Williams
Fred Vasseur quits Alfa Romeo-Sauber and heads to Ferrari
Andreas Seidl quits McLaren and heads to Alfa Romeo-Sauber (May be long term plan for Audi 2026?)

Who's next

This is the year where not just drivers, but team principals too are part of the merry-go-round

The main changes for 2023 have centered on the floor of the cars, owing to the divisive nature of the teams when it comes to some cars porpoising and bouncing – and many of them feel they’re being changed for the wrong reasons.

So there has been a back-and-forth dialogue between the governing body and the 10 F1 constructors to find some common ground ahead of the adjustments, with the FIA having to soften its approach when compared with its initial recommendations.

It originally insisted on the outer portion of the floor being raised by 25mm, and more stringent load tests being applied in order that the floor doesn’t overtly flex, thus reducing the ability for teams to run the edge of the floor closer to the track’s surface and inherit the associated aerodynamic performance available.

As a compromise the regulations have been altered to reflect a 15mm height increase at the outer edge of the floor for 2023, with no more than 5mm vertical deflection when a 250N load is applied in a downwards direction and no more than 5mm vertically when a 250N load is applied upwards.

Good to see that he will be with one of the best teams and you never know, he may get a chance too.

Personally feel with so much analytics and data science coming in, the team principal's role is diminished a lot. I loved those dark ages when no data was available and the likes of Jean Todt took split second decisions based on instinct. Ah...just memories.

Soon we will have paddocks with boston dynamics robots

I think that's probably a nostalgic notion. Perhaps the volume of data might have been considerably lesser, but as the Principal of a team like Ferrari, Jean Todt would have hardly been relying on just instinct. The top teams in any sport have always had the best data and cutting-edge technologies of their time available to them. And the late 90s-early 2000s when Todt was taking decisions were hardly the dark ages of computing power. I believe the Indian cricket team too started employing video analysis, down to ball-by-ball stats around that time itself. (I have a friend who worked on the team that built the software they used to use back then.)

I remember reading about one of the first football analysts who kept track of all the passes in hundreds of football games that he watched using a pen and notebook in the 1950s. The analysis from that was used by one of the English football teams back then with some success. Archaic tech for sure, but cutting edge for those days. Similarly, what we consider cutting-edge today will be considered quaint perhaps 20 years from now. But the point is it's never just instinct, top teams always use the best analysis and tools available for their era. It's all about how they use it.

[And let's not forget, the computers of the late 60s sent men to the Moon!]

They have absolutely nailed the look, looks absolutely mean and stunning in Black.

Hopefully they compete similarly!

I am going to get a scale model of this car!

Re: Formula 1 : 2023 Season

Some nice looking cars this year, with everything to play for in the top teams.
I am sure it will be more closely fought than last year.

Also curious to the extend the gap to the top 3 teams reduces.

What shocked me though, was Mclaren coming straight out to say they were not happy with the new car and hoped for improvements 3-4 races in.
I cannot remember the last team to say anything like this for a long time.
Does anyone here recall ?

James Key was highly rated and yet this year seems a repeat of last season's disappointment. I can understand a one off, but he will be on thin ice I am sure.

Only team that comes to my mind is Haas in 2021 season where they said they gave up on season before it started and where diverting everything towards upcoming regulations.
