Jerez 97 - michael hits villeneuve to try & win championship

had downloaded the whole race..
real exciting one that.. and it all culminated to michael's attempt to take out villeneuve
it was shocking, how could he even try such a thing after taking out hill at adelaide !

here's what i saw :
( MS is leading the championship by 1 point over JV.. )

final pit stops are over, MS is P1, but JV is lapping a little quicker than him in P2,
20 laps from the end MS suddenly drops his pace (with JV about 5 secs behind) by about 1.75 secs
JV obviously closes in..
MS then leaves the inside wide open into a right hand corner..
JV obviously goes for it.. and michael deliberately closes the door and attempts to take him out
they collide, MS's right front hitting JV's left sidepod but he doesnt do enough damage, MS is stuck in the gravel and JV goes on to finish the race in 3rd place, winning the championship

Martin Brundle commentating :
"That didnt work, you hit the wrong part of him, Michael, my friend"

"very conscious effort to turn in.. i shouldnt say much more"

Villeneuve at post race press conference :
"he left the inside open, MS turning in was expected"

MS sees JV alongside, but still turns in
(you can see his left hand holding the steering wheel at almost 90 degrees lock )

they make contact, MS doesnt back off, still keeps turning right, attempting to take JV off

this is after contact & MS is still trying to take JV out

in the end, justice prevailed.. he tried to do it once too often

I believe he was stripped off all his championship points that year because of this incident.

I saw this live and I was a MS fan at that time.....it was shameful to the say the least.
He was stripped on his 2nd place but a more fitting punishment would have been a ban (5 race or more). Even more so since MS apologized publicly!
That race showed me why Michael was a flawed genius (even the Hill incident at Adelaide) and although I egged him on to win in 98/99 that was more due to me wanting Ferrari to finally end their title drought.
Austria 2002 was the final straw and although I recognize his ability and respect his talent I cannot support him or Ferrari till he is there.
Sadly to most of the fans new to F1 in India, he is God coz he wins all the time.
They do not know or don't care about many of the things he has done....thats life

And sadly no one cared a damn about the Mika 'The Flying Finn' Hakkinen, because everyone wanted Ferrari to win.

I agree.....I was one of those then......because I loved the red cars and wanted them to finally win a title (last one was 1979) who can believe that now ? :-O

I always liked Mika though and he was a true champion in all respects.

I was an MS/Ferrari fan then and still am..
He was obviously wrong doing this.. but it just showed how desperate they were for the championship. Shows hes still just another human like Senna and Prost who've done the same thing. Ferrari/MS got so close to the championship during the initial years... and its was not to be so many times.. even the next few seasons after that.

Well that has a huge downer for MS fans to say the least. Was watching the race and broke my heart. I have beena MS fan solid since 93.

What no one ever discusses were the real circumstances, and this is no redemption nor excuse just the actual build up to why it happened- He had taken off, led the race, was winning easily, and then the main ferrari problem at the time (,beilieve it or not) came back to haunt him - reliability.
The brakes started fading badly, and he was unable to lap as quickly.
In that moment, all that he had battled in the last two years, basically beaten a far superior car, he lost his head and turned in. Damn bloody sad the whole thing./
I guess he just wanted it so bad, that he forgot everything for that moment
