The news regarding Massa has just turned grim. The latest reports suggest his condition is serious and life threatening.
I pray for his recovery. The world of motorsports do not need another casualty.

Massa in 'life-threatening condition' - Planet-F1 News - from planet-f1.com

I hope Felipe recovers fast and is back in his car soon! It's never good when a driver is hurt. Having said that, I honestly do not believe he was going 200 Km/h either when he got hit or when he hit the tyre barrier. He was taking it quite easy and thank God for that, or his crash would have been much worse.

My thoughts also go out to the Surtees family. Another sad loss.

My god !!! what a crash it was. Couldn`t watch it live so was awake till 3 in the night just to see what happened to massa.

Sad time for motorsport with 2 drivers getting hit on the helmet in such similar circumstances. Freaky... Even though Massa might recover, what are his chances of driving an F1 car ever again? Hope to see him back in his Ferrari soon.

Edit: Fortunately, the "life-threatening" bit of news might not be true.

For those of you who missed the qualifying, here is a picture of Massa being taken to an ambulance. Warning though, it is graphic and might be unsuitable for many of you.

OMG ! Horrific crash, hope Massa recovers soon and is behind the wheel of an F1 car again !

The life threatening part is typical PlanetF1 sensationalism. Its a serious injury but no doubt he'll live to race another day. I still want to know how that stray Brawn component was bouncing so high.

Last week a Formula 2 driver Henry Surtees, son of a very famouns race car driver John Surtees passed away at the age of 18.

One of the cars in front of him collided with the barrier. One of the tyres flew out from that car and onto the track. Henry's car was in the path of the tyre and the tyre hit his helmet at 200kmph. Henry was unconscious and ploughed into the barriers next corner.

Later in hospital he was pronounced dead due to severe head injuries.

Very horrible accident.

these helmets cost around 18,000 euros each ( & I believe Jensen Button uses a new one for every race!!). now with this freak accident, expect the manufacturers to spend millions on making them more safer. Cost cutting down the drain???

Well its more than worth it if it prevents injuries and deaths, isn't it?

Surely. It is money well spent. Safety is one area where spending is justified.

Well the helmets are safe, they never break if you see. If you hit an object travelling 200kmph, it's the force of impact that will injure you. The object may not break through the helmet.

But this particular thing did cut through the visor. That's why Massa has a cut above his eye. He could have easily lost an eye were it not for some incredible luck. That is really why they need to look at helmets again if you ask me

After the piece of debris hit his car, the on board camera views show that the acc pedal was fully slammed down and so was the brake. both pedals were fully depressed and no steering input. He might have been unconscious as soon as the spring hit him.

It was shocking to see Massa's accident yesterday. The piece of suspension that hit his helmet knocked him out cold and he crashed into the barriers at 200 kmph with both the accelerator and brake depressed at the same time. If he did indeed get a cut, the helmet manufacturer (Schuberth..i think) should go back to the drawing borad in terms of designing its helmets! :Shockked:

One could see the tyres locked up as he crashed and could hear the engine in high revs after he crashed into the wall. With a concussion, I don't think he will be permitted to race today.

Buddy, it's a career threatening injury. Doctors have said that the road to recovery will be long and brain damage cannot be assessed until he wakes up from his medically-induced coma today.
