Alonso - The next Schumacher?

The similarities are startling. Both won their first two titles with Renault/Benetton under Flavio Briatore. Both eventually moved to Ferrari. And now, Ferrari have said this: 'Ferrari needs Alonso to take a Schumi role' - Planet-F1 News - from planet-f1.com

Can Alonso do it? Can he bring Ferrari back to the glory days or is he going to disappoint them? And if Alonso cannot deliver, what will Ferrari do?

Though making predictions at this point may be futile , Alonso replicating a Schumi style dominance of F1 looks difficult . He may win multiple championships but not as many as Schumacher I guess .
As you have pointed out there are many similarities but there are a few differences as well . Here are a few that come to mind :

Jean Todt is no longer the team principal ,in his place is Stefano D.

Rory Byrne the tech guru is no longer there .

Ross Brawn the stratergic genius and technical mastermind is now backed by Mercedes and is now a major rival with a championship already under him .

Rubens Barrichello is not there to bring up the rear and follow team orders . Massa clearly wouldnt be so cooperative .

Mclaren have two world champions driving what might turn out to be a pretty competetive car .

Mclaren are not the only challengers with RedBull having Adrain Newey , Vettel and Webber and ofcourse Mercedes should be right up there too .

Ferraris are not known to be fuel effecient so the new rules might not suit them .

All that said Ferrari have been devoloping the car for almost half a year now and the Alonso - Ferrari partnership looks all set to start on a winning note .

On a lighter note , the last two teams Alonso has been to have been caught in big cheating scandals is Ferrari next ?

Alonso's attitude might not help the cause either...Massa might have a tough time ahead...

That would definitely be happening , if only he could keep his cool.
Just the attitude is wrong. Otherwise i consider him the most talented driver in f1 today. My thought.

Alonso, is probably a great driver.

i guess the attitude has gone wrong somewhere.

we all rooted for him when he was an underdog at renault and was challenging michael for the top spot.

it remains to be seen how he behaves when he has no pushover as his team mate (massa).

If Ferrari is expecting Alonso to be the next Schumacher, they are in trouble. When you try to make someone else out of another, usually it doesn't work.
If they don't give him a good car, there is very little Alonso can do.

I would not like to add any comments at this moment. I guess we'll all know the answer by the end of the next season

Re: Alonso - The next Schumacher?

There will never be another Shumi..

but here is the power of Alonso.. clearly the most respected/powerful driver Ferrari has ever had :

Montezemolo reiterates praise of Alonso
http://en.espnf1.com/ferrari/motorsp...ry/159291.html

Says quite the bit on how much they rate him doesnt it.

and a prediction made in March, 9 years ago :
